1.) Who’s Socrates and Plato?

Socrates
-Was an ancient Greek philosopher considered to be the forerunner of western philosophy
Socrates was a scholar, teacher, and a philosopher who influenced countless of thinkers
throughout the generation
His method for questioning famously know as SOCRATIC METHOD.
This method laid the ground for western system of logic in particular and philosophy in general

Plato
-Was considered to be the greatest student of Socrates
- Socrates did not write anything, it was Plato who wrote Socrates philosophy and systematically
articulated Socrates philosophy through his famous dialogues which also chronicled Socrates life

2.) What’s Socrates’s Philosophy about?

-Socrates was fully convinced that philosophy must obtain practical results for the greater wellbeing of
society.

- the very first step towards the realization of this goal is the acquisition of wisdom through knowing
one’s self. Socrates famously said “Ultimate wisdom comes from knowing one’s self”.

- the key to understanding Socrates’s concept of the self is through the philosopher’s take on the SOUL.

3.) What does Socrates’ concept/view of the Soul?

“THE SOUL IS THE ESSENCE OF THE HUMAN PERSON”

-Socrates’s referring in this quote is that the essence of humans is being a thinking and willing subject
which Frederick Copleston believes off.

Soul/self=Responsible agent discovering one’s true self in knowing and acting rightly or wrongly that
builds up overtime by turning ourselves inward (to reflect).

- Socrates’s view of the soul is about having an Intellectual and moral personality of humans since Soul is
the seat of Knowledge, Ignorance, Goodness and Badness

4.) Why is taking care of the Soul important?

“THE UNEXAMINE LIFE IS NOT WORTH LIVING”

We need to take care of our soul to attain the GOOD LIFE which the ultimate goal of Socrates's
philosophy.

For Socrates, the good life means being wise and virtuous.

Knowledge=To know is to know oneself

Virtue=Born in Humans and will show through self-examination

For him, the good life is attained through the acquisition of knowledge, wisdom and virtue of Outside
factors (Exogenously) and the factors in the inner being (Endogenously).
5.) The truth in Socrates’s concept of Self

-Once a person discovers the truth after examining oneself

-with the knowledge you put unto examining oneself then that person does what they think is the right
thing to do.

With Socrates’s famous dictum: “KNOWING WHAT IS RIGHT IS DOING WHAT IS RIGHT”

-This represents how one can be capable of taking care of oneself when they take their time in knowing
the truth which is not in materialistic things and social status.

-Socrates was aware of the existence of evil behind the Famous dictum and it was claimed that those
who think the right thing is through evil are ignorant of knowing the truth, they lack attention of building
the knowledge to realize a clear meaning of a Good life.

6.) Overall Summary: In the video you can see that Socrates was very wise. Socrates famously
maintained that our true self is our soul. As you can see in the video it is safe to assume that the soul is
the intellectual and moral personality of the humans. It gives a clear idea on what Socrates meant in
knowing oneself.

Virtue comes from within. Socrates was convinced that the human person can discover the truth and
the truth is "Knowing what is right and wrong”. It was stated that "Those who commit evil acts are
ignorant of the truth".

One's true self should not be identified with what one owns, reputation, social status or even with one's
body because the state of the soul which is the person's inner being determines the quality of oneself. It
gives us a realization that the true self is one that is lived in accordance with knowledge, wisdom and
virtue.
