AIM: -To determine experimentally, the ultimate shear strength in double shear of mild steel
rod.
OBJECTIVE: -
• To determine experimentally, the ultimate shear strength in double shear of mild steel rod
DIAGRAM:-
THEORY:-
Shear testing is performed to determine the shear strength of a material. It measures the
maximum shear stress that may be sustained before a material will rupture. Shear strength is
required while designing the connectors such as bolts, pins, and rivets which may be subjected to
single shear or double shear. These connectors are used in many joining applications, for
example in constructing a boiler or frames of the automobiles.
Single Shear: Under Single shear, bolt stem has a single section which supports the load.
If plates A and B are connected by bolt C, shear will take place in bolt C in plane DD'. The bolt is
in single shear. To determine the average shearing stress in the plane, free-body diagrams of bolt
C and of the portion of the bolt located above the plane is drawn. Observing that the shear P = F,it
can be concluded that the average shearing stress is:
Double Shear: Under Double shear, bolt stem has two sections which support the load. Its
shear force (hence average shear stress) is halved
If splice plates H and J are used to connect plates E and G, shear will take place in bolts K and L
in each of the two planes MM' and NN'. The bolts are in double shear. To determine the average
shearing stress in each plane, free-body diagrams of bolt L and of the portion of the bolt located
between the two planes is drawn. Observing that the shear P in each of the sections is P = F/2, it
can be concluded that the average shearing stress is:
Where, ‘F’ Load taken by the specimen at the time of failure and‘A’ is the cross sectional area
resisting the shear
PROCEDURE:-
1. Place the shear test attachment on the lower table, this attachment consists of cutter.
2. Insert specimen in shear test attachment so that only a double plane is resisting the
applied load called double shear.
3. Lift the lower table so that the zero is adjusted.
4. Apply the load gradually and increase until failure occurs i.e., the specimen should break
in three pieces.
5. Note down the maximum load at failure [Double Shear].
6. Stop the machine and remove the specimen.
7. Repeat the steps for second and third trial

FDS = Load taken by the specimen at the time of failure (Double shear) in Newton
PRECAUTION:-
1. The measuring range should not be changed at any stage during the test.
2. The inner diameter of the hole in the shear test attachment should be slightly greater
than that of the specimen.
3. Measure the diameter of the specimen accurately.
