“SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT SHOWING EFFECTS ON

ENVIRONMENT”

1.0 . Rationale

The increasing volume and complexity of waste associated with the modern economy is
posing a serious risk to ecosystems and human health. Every year, an estimated 11.2 billion
tonnes of solid waste is collected worldwide and decay of the organic proportion of solid
waste is contributing about 5% of global greenhouse gas emission. Of all the waste streams,
waste from electrical and electronic equipment containing new and complex hazardous
substances presents the fastest-growing challenge in both developing
countries.
Poor waste management – ranging from non-existing collection systems to ineffective
disposal-causes air pollution, water and soil contamination. Open and unsanitary landfills
contribute to contamination of drinking water and can cause infection and transmit diseases.
The dispersal of debris pollutes ecosystems and dangerous substances from electronic waste
or industrial garbage puts a strain on the health of urban dwellers and the environment.
The solution, in the first place, is the minimisation of waste. Where waste cannot be
avoided, recovery of materials and energy from waste as well as remanufacturing and
recycling waste into usable products should be second option Recycling leads substantial
resource savings. For example, for every tonne of paper recycled, 17trees and 50%of water
can be saved. Moreover, recycling creates jobs: the sector employs 12 million people in
Brazil, China and United states alone.

2
EFFECTS OF SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT
 Environmental pollution: Poor waste management can lead to soil, air and water pollution,

impacting ecosystems and human health.

 Health Risks: Improper disposal of waste can result in the spread of diseases through

contaminated water and air, affected both human and animal populations.

 Resources Depletion: Inefficient waste management contributes to the depletion of natural

resources, as materials that could be reusing are often discarding.

 Habitat Destruction : Improper waste disposal can lead to habitat destruction and the loss of

biodiversity, affecting wildlife and ecosystems.

 Aesthetic and Social Impact: Uncontrolled dumping and littering can negatively impact the

aesthetics of an area and contribute to a decline in community well-being.

TYPES OF SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT

 Landfilling
 Recycling
 Composting
 Waste-to-energy
 Source Reduction

2.0 Aim Of The Micro Project

Solid Waste Management showing effects on environment

3.0 Course Outcomes Addressed

Develop Public awareness about environment

4.0 Literature Review

Solid waste management (SWM) is a critical issue facing urban areas worldwide. The
increasing volume of waste generated due to urbanization, industrialization, and population
growth poses significant challenges. This review synthesizes the literature on the environmental
impacts of solid waste management practices, highlighting key findings and trends.

Leachate Contamination: Landfills can produce leachate, a toxic liquid that can contaminate

soil and groundwater (Christensen et al., 2001).

Air Pollution: Emissions from incinerators may contain dioxins, furans, and particulate matter,

affecting air quality and human health (Zhang et al., 2018).

Soil and Water Contamination: Residual ash can leach toxins into the environment (Rao et al.,

2022).

Waste Minimization: Encouraging reduction at the source through policies and public

awareness can significantly reduce waste generation (Murray et al., 2017).

Integrated SWM: Combining various waste management strategies tailored to local contexts

promotes sustainability and reduces environmental footprints (Zubair et al., 2020).

5.0 Proposed Methodology

Firstly, we collect information about the water treatment plant. After collection all information,
we discussed with microproject supervisor about the preparing a brief report on water treatment
plant and making the report as mentioned in online and books under guidance of micro project
supervisor and after checking this then we prepared the microproject report.

7.0 Outputs Of The Micro-Projects

• Implementation of separate bins for recyclables, compostables, and general waste.

• Increased community participation in proper waste sorting.

• Promotion of biogas and other renewable energy sources from waste.

• Decrease in the amount of waste sent to landfills, alleviating land use issues

• Increased awareness and responsibility for waste management among community

members.
• The outputs of effective solid waste management significantly contribute to
environmental protection, public health, and resource sustainability. Continued efforts
in improving SWM practices are essential to address ongoing environmental
challenges and foster a healthier planet.

8.0 Skill Developed / Learning Outcome Of This Micro-Project

Environmental Awareness

 Understanding Environmental Impact: Deepened understanding of how solid

waste management affects soil, water, air quality, and biodiversity.

 Sustainability Principles: Gained insights into sustainable practices, such as the

3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) and their significance in environmental
conservation.

5
Communication Skills

 Presentation Skills: Improved ability to communicate findings and

recommendations to diverse audiences through presentations

Project Management

 Planning and Organization: Learned to plan and execute a micro-project,

managing time and resources effectively to meet project objectives.

 Team Collaboration: If conducted in a group, enhanced teamwork and

collaboration skills, working collectively to achieve common goals.

Community Engagement

 Awareness of Community Needs: Developed an understanding of community

perspectives and needs regarding waste management.

 Advocacy Skills: Enhanced ability to advocate for sustainable waste

management practices within local communities.

9.0 Application Of This Micro-Project

 Educational Workshops: Organize workshops to educate community members about

the importance of effective solid waste management and its environmental impacts.

 Outreach Programs: Develop campaigns to promote the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse,

Recycle) and encourage community participation in waste reduction initiatives.

 Waste Audits: Conduct waste audits for local businesses and institutions to identify
waste reduction opportunities and implement best practices.

 Composting Programs: Establish community composting initiatives to divert organic

waste from landfills and produce valuable soil amendments.
