Course Objectives:
• To get a grounding of basic network components and architecture.
• To learn the way protocols are used in networks.
• To understand the Internet and Intranet, Protocols at different layers and their
services, Network Applications like web, HTTP, FTP and Electronic Mail in the Internet,
Domain Name System, and Transport-Layer Services.
Unit I
Overview of existing networks. OSI Reference Model Architecture, TCP/IP Model and their
comparison. Addressing (Physical, Logical, Port). Connecting Devices (Hub, Repeater, Bridge,
Router, Gateway), Network Performance Metrics, Wired LAN-Ethernet (802.3) and Types,
Wireless LAN (802.11), Point-to-Point Protocol

Unit II
Introduction to Network Layer, Role of the network layer, Routing Algorithms, Distance Vector
and Link-State routing, RIP, OSPF, and BGP protocols, IP: Internet Protocol, IPv4 and IPv6
addressing, IP packet structure, IPv4 Addressing and Sub-netting, CIDR notation, IPv6
addressing and header format, IPv6 transition mechanisms, ICMP: Internet Control Message
Protocol, ICMP message types, ICMP error reporting and diagnostics.

Unit III
Introduction to Transport Layer Services TCP and UDP, Principles of Reliable Data Transfer-
Stop-and-wait, Go-Back-N, and Selective Repeat, Connection-Oriented Transport: TCP three-
way handshake, Flow control and congestion control, Congestion Control Algorithms.

Unit IV
Principles of Application Layer Protocols, Web and HTTP, File Transfer: FTP, Electronic Mail:
SMTP, POP, IMAP, Domain Name System (DNS).
