### **Lesson Plan: Present Continuous Tense**

**Level:** Beginner to Intermediate

**Duration:** 60 minutes
**Objective:**
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to understand and use the present continuous
tense to describe actions happening right now or around the present time.

---

### **Materials:**
- Whiteboard and markers
- Pictures/Flashcards of people doing activities
- Handouts with exercises
- Worksheets for homework
- (Optional) Projector for visual aids

---

### **Lesson Procedure:**

#### **1. Warm-Up (10 minutes)**

- **Activity:** Show students pictures of people doing various actions (e.g., someone
reading, swimming, eating).
- Ask: "What is he doing?" or "What are they doing?"
- Encourage students to respond with sentences like "He is reading" or "They are
swimming."
- **Purpose:** To introduce the present continuous form in context and activate students’
existing knowledge.

---

#### **2. Presentation (15 minutes)**

- **Explanation:**
- The present continuous tense is used to describe:
1. Actions happening right now (e.g., "I am studying English.")
2. Actions happening around this moment but not necessarily at the exact moment of
speaking (e.g., "She is working on a big project this week.")
3. Temporary actions or situations (e.g., "They are staying at a hotel.")

- **Structure:**
- **Affirmative Form:**
- Subject + **am/is/are** + verb + -ing
- Example: "She is eating lunch."

- **Negative Form:**
- Subject + **am not/is not/are not** + verb + -ing
- Example: "I am not playing football."
- **Interrogative Form:**
- **Am/Is/Are** + subject + verb + -ing?
- Example: "Are you reading a book?"

- **Common Time Expressions:**

- Now, right now, at the moment, these days, currently

---

#### **3. Practice (20 minutes)**

- **Activity 1: Fill-in-the-Blanks**
- Students complete sentences with the correct form of the present continuous tense.
- Example: "She ____ (watch) TV right now."

- **Activity 2: Picture Description**

- Show students a picture of people engaged in various activities. In pairs, have students
describe what the people in the picture are doing using the present continuous.
- Example: "The girl is swimming in the pool."

- **Activity 3: Miming Game**

- One student mimes an action (e.g., eating, dancing, writing), and others guess by asking
questions like: "Are you writing?" "Are you dancing?"
- The student answers with "Yes, I am" or "No, I’m not."

---

#### **4. Production (10 minutes)**

- **Activity: What's Happening in Your Life?**
- Ask students to write 5 sentences about what they and their family/friends are doing these
days.
- Example: "I am studying for my exams. My brother is playing video games."

- **Optional Group Activity: Role Play**

- In groups, students create short dialogues where they talk about what they are doing at
the moment or this week.
- Example:
- A: "What are you doing this weekend?"
- B: "I’m visiting my grandparents."

---

#### **5. Review and Homework (5 minutes)**

- **Review Key Points:**
- Affirmative, negative, and interrogative forms of the present continuous.
- Use of time expressions like "now" and "at the moment."

- **Homework:**
- Assign a worksheet where students complete sentences using the present continuous
and write a short paragraph about activities happening in their neighborhood or school.
