Plate Tectonics - Worksheet 1
Plate Tectonics - Worksheet 1
Introduction:
Plate tectonics is a fundamental concept in geology that explains how the
Earth's outer shell, known as the lithosphere, is divided into several large and small
plates that float over the semi-fluid asthenosphere beneath them. The movement
of these tectonic plates causes various geological formations and phenomena,
including folds, faults, trenches, volcanoes, rift valleys, and mountain ranges. This
hands-on activity will help you visualize and understand these processes by
creating clay models.
Materials:
modeling clay in various colors ruler
flat surface or tray plastic knife or similar tool
toothpicks (for labeling)
Procedure:
1. Folds:
- Roll out a thin layer of clay to represent the sedimentary layers.
- Gently push the edges towards each other to create wave-like folds.
- Use toothpicks to label the anticlines (upward folds) and synclines (downward
folds).
2. Faults:
- Create two adjacent layers using different colors of clay.
- Slide one layer over the other to simulate a fault line.
- Use a ruler to create a straight cut and shift one side up or down to demonstrate
normal, reverse, or strike-slip faults.
5. Mountain Ranges:
- Push two clay layers together with considerable force to simulate the collision of
continental plates forming mountains.
- Shape the clay to illustrate the rugged peaks and slopes.
Questions:
2. How does the movement of tectonic plates lead to the formation of a trench?
