MATTER

Lesson 2: Measuring Matter:

1. Measuring - a way to compare sizes or amounts . People use tools

marked with standard units to measure matter. A standard unit of
measurement that people agree to use, such as feet or miles.

2. Metric System - A common system of standard units is the metric

system. Scientists use the metric system.

3. Length - You measure length to find out how long something is. You
have probably used rulers to measure the length of different objects.
In the metric system, length is measured in units called meters.

4. Volume - volume describes how much space an object takes up. You
probably have used measuring cups to measure the volume of liquids. You
can also use beakers or graduated cylinders. In the metric system, a
liquid's volume is measured in units called liters.

5. Pan Scale - you can use a pan scale to measure mass. In the metric
system, mass is measured in grams.

6.Temperature - is a measurement of how hot or cold something is.

7.Thermometer – is a tool used to measure temperature.

Temperature is measured in degrees Celsius (C) degrees Fahrenheit
(F). You can measure the temperature of air, water, and food.
Lesson 3: Changes of State:

1. Melt – to change from a solid to a liquid.

2. Boil – to change from a liquid to a gas.

3. Evaporate – to change from a liquid to a gas without boiling.

4. Condense – to change from a gas to a liquid.

5. Freeze – to change from a liquid to a solid.

CHANGES OF STATE:
Solid -> Liquid
Liquid -> Gas
Gas -> Liquid
Liquid -> Solid
NOTES:
-Different types of matter melt at different temperatures.

-Ice melts at a temperature above 32°F.

-The gas state of water is called water vapor.

-The SUN can cause matter to change. It can melt solids into liquids. It
can also cause liquids to evaporate and turn into gas.
