Differences between RAM & ROM

Attribute RAM ROM

Abbreviation RAM stands for Random Access ROM stands for Read Only Memory.
Memory.

Definition RAM is a primary memory of the ROM is a primary memory of the

computer that stores those data and computer that stores those
instructions on which the CPU is computer instructions and programs
currently working. that do not need to be altered in
future like BIOS.

Storage It is a volatile memory. Which it is a non-volatile memory that

Nature means it stores data as long as means it stores data permanently
power is on. even when power is off.

Data The CPU of the computer can read, CPU can only read data from ROM,
Access write, or alter the data on RAM. but it can write or change.

Usage Used to store data that CPU needs Used to store data permanently in
for current instruction processing. computer.

Types two major types of RAM available Three types of ROM available
SRAM (Static Random Access PROM (Programmable ROM),
Memory) and DRAM (Dynamic EPROM (Erasable PROM), and
Random Access Memory). EEPROM (Electrically EPROM).

Speed The speed of RAM is quite high. The speed of ROM is slower than
RAM.

CPU CPU can access data stored on Data to be copied from ROM to
