ELEN E4215 Problem Set #3 Fall 2024

Due date: Tuesday 9/24/2024. Upload your submission via Courseworks.

1. A two-stage op-amp has g m = 1 mAV , R = 100k , C1 = 500 fF , and

A2 = 100V . The first stage transconductor can provide a maximum output

V
current of 200A .
a. Compute the gain (in dB), pole frequency, unity gain frequency, and
slew rate of the op-amp.
b. The slew rate of the op-amp is to be increased by 25%. If C1 and the
unity gain frequency are not to be changed, what op-amp parameters
can be adjusted? What should be the new values of these
parameters?
c. The slew rate of the op-amp is to be increased by 25%. If the unity
gain frequency and power consumption of the op-amp are not to be
changed, what op-amp parameters can be adjusted? What should be
the new values of these parameters? (Note: Power consumption is
directly linked to Io,max, the maximum current from the 1st stage
transconductor. Increasing Io,max will increase the power
consumption.)
2. Two 1st order active-RC filters with ideal op-amps are shown in the figure
below.

a. Derive transfer functions H (s ) = Vo (s )V (s ) for the two filters. Sketch

i

the magnitude and phase response for the two designs, and comment.

b. An input v1 (t ) = 1V  cos
t 
 is applied to the filters. Determine the
 10RC 
op-amp output current io (t ) as a function of time, and comment on
the difference between the two circuits.
3. A 1st order filter active RC filter is being designed to have a zero frequency of
100kHz, a pole frequency of 10MHz, and a dc gain of 0dB. The input
resistance to the filter should be 1k.
a. Sketch a schematic of an active-RC filter that realizes these
specifications, including all component values. What is the high-
frequency gain of the filter? Assume ideal op-amps.
b. The design is to be implemented using a MOSFET-C topology, where
the resistors in part (a) are replaced with n-channel MOSFETs
operating in the triode region. The input signal has a dc level close to
0V. The MOSFETs have  n Cox = 200 A , Vtn = 0.4V , and the gate
V2
voltage is 1V (a single voltage is applied to all MOSFET gates). Sketch
the corresponding MOSFET-C and determine the required W/L ratios
for all MOSFETs.

c. Determine SVG , the sensitivity of the filter pole frequency to changes
p

in the gate voltage applied to the MOSFETs. Similarly, determine SVG
z

, the sensitivity of the filter zero frequency to changes in the gate

p
z
voltage applied to the MOSFETs. Finally, determine SVG , the
sensitivity of the ratio of the pole frequency to the zero frequency to
changes in the gate voltage applied to the MOSFETs.
