Learning Module 3 – The Normal Distribution

I. General Instructional Guidelines

1.1 Do all the activities and answer all questions.
1.2 Submit your accomplished module in our Google Classroom.
1.3 Academic integrity is a very important component in your outputs. You are expected to honestly do your tasks to
maximize learning using this module.

B.2 The Learning Activities

Activity 1. Read and answer.

Research showed that the lifespan of smartphones is normally distributed with the mean of 30 months and a standard
deviation of 5 months. The guarantee policy will refund the full purchase price if the phone fails within the guarantee
period. If you are the Sales Manager, how many months should you give as quanrantee period if you don’t want to refund
purchase price on more than 5% of the smartphones sold? Justify your answer.

Can you cite othe examples of variables that are normally distributed?
2

Activity 2. Answer the following:

1. Where is the median of the normal distribution? Explain your answer.

2. Where is the mode of the normal distribution? Explain your answer.

3.The figure below shows two normal distribution curves representing the time taken to prepare face masks (“S”) and
face sheilds (“A”):

a. Which has the larger mean?

b. Which has the larger standard deviation?

3

Activity 3. Answer as required.

A. What is the probability that z is less than

1. -1.3
2. 0.56
3. 2.0

B. What is the probability that z is greater than

1. -1.3
2. 0.56
3. 1.8

C. If µ= 6 and σ = 10,
What is the probability that x is less than
1. 5
2. 12
What is the probability that x is greater than
3. 5
4. 12
What is the probability that x is between
6. 5 and 12
7. 12 and 14
4

Activity 4 : Answer the following problems. Show your process.

1. Suppose that a television set is designed so that its lifetime (in months) is approximately normally distributed with mean

32.4 months and standard deviation 6.5 months. The manufacturer has decided to use a marketing strategy in which
the television set is covered by warranty for 18 months. Approximately what proportion of the televion set will fail the
warranty? Is it still safe to give 24 months warranty? Why?

2. A teacher wants to start a reading class for the bottom 20% of students who take a reading test. The average score on
the test is 82 and the st. deviation is 5. What is the highest grade of the students who will be joining the reading class?
If the teacher wants to assign top 10% of the students as tutors, what is the lowest grade of the tutor?

3. The Pinoy Fastfood chain has studied its customers to determine how much money they spend on food. The study
revealed that the spending distribution is approximately normally distributed with a mean of P 450.00 and a standard
deviation of P 50.00. What percentage of customers will spend more that P600.00 on food? What could be an
implication of this data on the operation of the fastfood?

Activity 5. Answer the questions below.

1. Can you explain the characteristics of a normal distribution?

2. Why is the normal distribution important in statistics?

3. What are the mean and standard deviation in a normal distribution?

4. How do changes in the mean and standard deviation affect the shape of a normal distribution?

5. How can you use normal distribution in your field of expertise?

6. Why do you think manufacturing companies are giving warranties on their products?

EU regulations insist that all mineral bottles that claim to contain 500mls must have at
least that amount. Fizzo orange has a machine for filling bottles, which puts an
average of 502 mls into each bottle with a standard deviation of 1.6 mls and follows a
Normal Distribution.
(i) If an EU inspector randomly selects a bottle of Fizzo Orange what is the
probability that it will break the regulations.
(ii) What proportion of bottles will contain between 500mls and 505mls.
(iii) 95% of bottles contain between A mls and B mls of liquid. What are A and B?

Reflection:

7. Why should we be mindful of the quality of our performance?
