6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

May require neutralization if pH < 3 or > 12. If practicable, flush to foul drain with plenty of water. Other-
wise, absorb spill with vermiculite or other inert material, such as sand or earth, then place in a suitable con -
tainer and dispose via a licensed disposal contractor. Clean surface thoroughly to remove residual contamina -
tion.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
7. HANDLING AND STORAGE

Personal Precautionary Measures: Do not breathe vapour. Do not get in eyes, on skin, on clothing. Use with
adequate ventilation. Wash thoroughly after handling.

Prevention of Fire and Explosion: Keep from contact with oxidizing materials. Minimize exposure to air. If
peroxide formation is suspected, do not open or move container.

Storage: Cool conditions (5-30°C). Keep container closed. Keep away from incompatible substances (see In
compatibility section). Store away from heat and light.

Ventilation: Good general ventilation of 10 or more room volumes per hour in the work area is recommen-
ded.
Match ventilation rates to conditions of use.

11. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION

Effects of Exposure:

General:

Part A: Hydroquinone has been classified as a Category 3 mutagen and carcinogen by the European Union
based on testing of rats and mice given hydroquinone by stomach tube or at high dietary levels. The Interna -
tional Agency for Resarch on Cancer (IARC) under ranking for cancer potential has classified hyroquinone in
Group 3, i. E. “not classifiable” as a carcinogen. In the European Union a Category 3 Mutagen attracts the risk
phrase R68 “Possible risk of irreversible effects” at concentrations above 1 %, and a Category 3 carcinogen
attracts the risk phrase R40 “Limited evidence of a carcinogenic effect” at concentrations above 1 %. Expos-
ure to products containing such substances shoulde be controlled to below established control limits and spe -
cial care should be taken with pregnant or breast-feeding women to ensure appropriate controls are in place to
control the risk.

Part B: Based on repeated-dose ingestion studies in animals, 1-phenyl-3-pyrazolidinone, a minor
component of this product may cause blood, testicular, and adverse reproductive effects.

Part C: Possible risk of respiratory and skin sensitization.

Inhalation:

Part A: Expected to be a low hazard for recommended handling.

Part B: Vapour irritating. May cause irritation to the mucous membranes and upper
respiratory tract.

Part C: Toxic by inhalation. May cause sensitization by inhalation. Vapour irritating.

May exacerbate pre-existing asthmatic disorders.

Eyes:

Part A: Irritating to eyes.

Part B: Causes burns.

Part C: Causes burns.

Skin:

Part A: May cause sensitization by skin contact.

Part B: Causes burns.

Part C: Causes burns. May cause sensitization by skin contact.

13. DISPOSAL CONSIDERATIONS

Obtain consent of the regulatory authorities before discharge to foul drain. Where consent to discharge has
been obtained, dispose of large volumes of working strength solution by discharging slowly from holding
tank. Select a time when the wash water flow rate is high to ensure maximum available dilution. Alternat-
ively, collect and dispose via a licensed waste disposal contractor.
Completely empty bottle or container and rinse well with water. When drained may be disposed as non-haz-
ardous waste.
