Don't Wait to Experience It, To Make You Understand

SETTING: Manuel Family's House

Mika (narrator): There is this known family in a small barangay, not just because they have
money to buy what they want, but because the mother is the barangay captain and the father is a
church pastor. They have two daughters named Mika and Alliyah. An accountancy graduate and a
psychology student.

Angel (mom): Have you heard about Loida’s daughter?

Mika: I heard about that, Mom! She tried to kill herself. What a crazy woman!

Daniel (dad): Don’t do such things like that. People do that just to get attention.

Mika: Maybe Aling Loida’s daughter has ADHD; that is why she acted like that. What an attention
seeker!

Angel (mom): I pity her. She’s lack of attention.

Alliyah: Really?! Talking like that in front of me? In front of a psychology student? Please be
sensitive!

Angel (mom): You raise your voice to us just to defend that attention seeker?!

Alliyah: I’m not defending her, Mom. I’m just saying that you should be sensitive.

Angel (mom): You’re defending that crazy woman!

Alliyah: I’ll go to school now.

SETTING: Alliyah’s University
Mika (narrator): After that, Alliyah went to school and attended her classes. Everything is
draining her. There are lots of schoolwork to do. Thesis, quizzes, exams, and even her position as
a class mayor are stressing her.

Mark: Here’s your test papers, Alliyah. You had the lowest score.

Daniel: I thought you’re smart? What happened?

Mark: I agree. What happened, Alliyah? You received low scores the past few days.

Alliyah: You guys are already in your third year as psychology students, and you acted like that?
You told me those words? So insensitive.

Daniel: What’s wrong with that? It’s true! You’re not really smart. You don’t know anything.

SETTING: Manuel Family's House

Mika (narrator): After school hours, Alliyah decided to go home with a heavy heart after all the
things that happened today. She just walked to go home because it was just near and she wanted
to save money. She also chose to walk because she wants to think about the schoolwork she needs
to pass tomorrow. She wants to make herself pressured and do it so she can avoid thinking about
her problems. When she finally got home, her mother was the one who was standing near the door.
There is no “How are you? “ or “Did you eat?” but instead, she was surprised by a painful slap.

Alliyah: Ah! W-why did you slap me, Mom?

Angel (mom): Who got you pregnant?! You’re such a flirt!

Alliyah: I didn’t want that to happen.

Daniel (dad): You didn’t, really?! You flirt with different boys, Alliyah.

Mika: Mom and Dad didn’t tell you to flirt, but to study! What did you do, huh? Are you that
thirsty for attention? You’re not different from Aling Loida’s daughter. She committed suicide just
because she got pregnant. But in reality, it’s your fault, so why commit suicide?

SETTING: Manuel Family’s Living Room

Mika (narrator): Because of tiredness, Alliyah just went inside her room. She didn’t mind talking
to her family more. She felt that she did not really belong in this family. They judge her like that
without letting her explain. There is also someone who manipulated everything...
Daniel (dad): We’re still talking!

Alliyah: I’m too tired.

SETTING: Alliyah’s Room

Mika (narrator): While Alliyah is inside her room, she hears her mom and dad talking outside
her room. They changed what they were talking about, and it is not about her being pregnant. Her
parents are fighting, and she knows that her sister is still there.

Daniel (dad): You think I forgot that I have seen you with Pareng Hobert? You’re such a flirt,
Angel! You’re like your daughter!

Mika: What are you... talking about?

Angel (mom): Don’t make a fake story about me, Daniel! You’re the one who cheated here!

Daniel (dad): No! You’re the one who flirts with someone else’s husband, Angel!

Mika: So you both cheated? What the... What’s happening in our family?

Mika (narrator): Alliyah didn’t stop herself from saying something. She also heard all of that.
She is mad at the things she heard. Her cheater parents are fighting over their third parties.

Alliyah: He is a pastor, but he commits a lot of sins. I am not saying that he must be perfect, but I
do not see him trying to be a good person without someone looking. He’s a monster inside our
house, but in the church, he is someone who smiles at everyone and acts as if he is the most kind
person.

SETTING: Alliyah’s Room

Mika (narrator): In the past days, Alliyah didn’t mind attending her classes. She locked herself
in her dark and quiet room. She thought about what happened in the past few days: low scores,
unwanted pregnancy, and their family is slowly losing each other. She suffered slow days without
someone to talk to. Without someone’s knowing, she started to think about ending her life. Each
day is tough for her. She prays every night to not wake up the next day. Imagining how she will
end her life. Imagining that she is holding a bottle of bleach, trying to drink it. Holding a lot of
medicines. Tying herself to a rope. She imagines those things because she thinks that she can’t live
anymore.

Mika: Alliyah! Go out, please. Are you okay there? How are you feeling?
Alliyah: I am fine. Just go away.

Mika: Can you please open this door? I want to talk to you, please.

Alliyah: Where’s Mom and Dad?

Mika: They already left. We just have each other now.

Mika: I understand you now, Alliyah... In the past few days, I suffered a lot of things. I suffered
without anyone else, and it is hard to think straight. I know now the importance of having someone
to talk to. So... Can you please open this door and let’s talk?

SETTING: Inside Mika’s Room

Mika (narrator): Alliyah opened the door for her sister so they could talk well. Even Mika told
her things that she didn’t expect to hear days ago; she still hugged her sister. It is like she forgot
that her sister judged her, too. She set aside her madness towards her sister.

Alliyah: Are you... fine now? How are you?

Mika: What are you saying? You care for others, but you don’t care for yourself. I am the one who
needs to ask you. How are you in the past few days?

Alliyah: Ate... I am glad that you understand now the situation. I am glad that you already
understand my point about mental health. That everyone must be sensitive to what they are saying
or doing because it can affect other people. Next time, don’t wait to experience the same thing just
so you can understand the situation.

Mika: Yeah... I understand Aling Loida’s daughter now. Why did she try to commit suicide. I didn’t
mean that whenever we have a lot of problems, we should end our lives. I just understand that
Aling Loida’s daughter has her reasons to scape. I’ve been so insensitive. I’m sorry, Alliyah.

Alliyah: It’s fine, Ate.

Mika: Maybe Aling Loida’s daughter suffered a lot of things also. Even though she has the money
to buy everything she wants, she still tries to end her life. Everyone has their own problems, and
for sure, she has hers, and she chose to escape. Let’s be thankful that, like us, there is someone
who saves us. She was saved by her mother, who went inside her room. And you... You save me
from doing it by running in my mind that you need my help.
Alliyah: You also helped me, Ate. You helped me the time I thought about ending my own life.
You just saved me from committing suicide.

Mika (narrator): No one talked after that. They both became quiet, maybe because they really have
a lot of realizations in life. The importance of someone we can talk to. Someone who can make us
feel that we are not alone. Someone we can lean on whenever we are physically and even mentally
tired. In simple terms, they realized the importance of having someone—a family, friend, partner
in life, and even a stranger.

Mika: Now, I am asking you. How are you? Who got you pregnant? Did you willingly give
yourself or...

Alliyah: I didn’t want this, Ate...

Mika: What?

Alliyah: Dad raped me countless times, Ate. He raped me whenever he wanted to, and he is not
alone. They are three who use me. Now... Tell me... Do I still need to live? I am too tired to handle
all of these.

Mika: You will live, okay? We will keep your child. No committing suicide and no abortion. I am
here now, Alliyah. You can tell me everything. I will help you in any way. All you need to do is try
to share things with me so you won’t feel that you’re alone. Try to open things.

Mika: We’ll make them pay for what they did. I promise you that... You deserve the justice. We’ll
be okay.
