Title: Influencing skills

Introduction:

After reading about influencing skills in Ivey's "Intentional Interviewing and Counseling,"
I’ve gained a better understanding of how to guide clients while respecting their
independence. This reflection looks at the main ideas and techniques from the book,
highlighting the importance of building strong relationships and helping clients make real
changes.

Understanding Influencing Skills

Influencing skill is an important tool for counselors who want to help clients sort through
their thoughts and feelings. I appreciate that this approach focuses on partnership rather than
just giving advice. The counselor’s role is to support clients in finding their own insights and
paths to change.

Focusing Essentials: Contextualizing and Broadening the Story

Focusing Essentials emphasizes the importance of understanding a client’s story within a

broader context. I’ve learned that simply addressing immediate issues isn’t enough; we need
to consider the client’s background, experiences, and the systems they’re part of. This
broader perspective allows for a more comprehensive understanding of the client’s struggles.

By contextualizing their experiences, I can help clients see connections they might not have
noticed before. This approach encourages deeper reflection and opens up new avenues for
exploration. It also reinforces the idea that our past experiences shape how we perceive and
react to current situations. In my practice, I aim to create space for clients to share their
stories fully, ensuring they feel heard and validated.

Empathic Confrontation: Identifying and Challenging Client Conflict

Empathic Confrontation is a powerful tool in the counseling process. It involves identifying

conflicts within the client’s narrative and gently challenging them. This method requires a
delicate balance of empathy and assertiveness. I’ve realized that confronting clients about
inconsistencies or harmful patterns in a supportive way can lead to significant breakthroughs.

When clients face their internal conflicts, it encourages self-reflection and growth. However,
it’s essential to approach these moments with care. I need to ensure that clients feel safe and
supported as we navigate these challenges together. By using empathic confrontation, I can
help clients acknowledge their struggles without feeling judged, fostering a sense of trust and
collaboration.
Facilitating Change

When discussing how to facilitate change, supporting clients in recognizing their strengths is
important. This idea resonates with my belief in a client-centered approach. I’m motivated to
adopt a strengths-based method in my practice, helping clients see their own resources as
they face challenges.

Handling Resistance

Understanding that resistance is a natural part of therapy helps me see it as an opportunity for
deeper discussion rather than a problem. This shift encourages me to be curious about clients’
resistance, exploring their concerns instead of trying to push through it.

Conclusion

Reflecting on insights of influencing skills motivates to deepen the practice through

empathy, active listening, and collaboration. The ideas and techniques guide in building
meaningful connections with clients, ultimately supporting their growth and self-discovery.
Both focusing on the broader context of a client’s story and using empathic confrontation are
vital skills that enhance my counseling practice. They allow for deeper engagement with
clients and encourage meaningful change. Even though I struggle with confronting I am
looking forward to practice the skill n
