Precalculus Quarter 2 Lecture 1.

Unit Circle
Objectives:
At the end of the session, students must be able to:
a. Illustrate the unit circle and the relationship between linear and angular
measures of a central angle in a unit circle.
b. Convert degree measure to radian measure and vice versa.
c. Illustrate angles in standard position and coterminal angles.

A unit circle is a circle with a radius measuring 1 unit.

The equation of the unit circle is given by the
equation:
𝑥2 + 𝑦2 = 1
Central angle is the angle subtended by an arc of a
circle at the center of a circle. The radius vectors
form the arms of the central angle. The central angle
of a unit circle is measured 1 radian if its intercepted
arc has length 1. Approximately, there are 6.28
radians in a circle.

Converting Angle Measures

To convert angles in degrees to radians, we use the formula:
𝜋
𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑎𝑛𝑠 = 𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑙𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑑𝑒𝑔 ×
180°
To convert angles in radians to degrees, we use the formula:
180°
𝑑𝑒𝑔𝑟𝑒𝑒𝑠 = 𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑙𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑟𝑎𝑑 ×
𝜋
To convert angles in degrees to degrees, minutes, seconds
• A central angle of a circle measures one degree, written 1°, if it intercepts
1 1
of the circumference of the circle. One minute, written 1′, is 60 of 1°,
360
1
while one second, written 1“, is 60 of 1′.
