“Data” Sounds Like A Lotta Fun!

Learning Objectives:
 Students will apply statistical methods learned throughout the year to collect and analyse data.
 Students will apply statistical methods to conduct research to find answers to questions that
impact our daily lives; this will provide students with the opportunity to see how mathematical
concepts can be connected to real life experiences.

This project will focus on statistics, which is a mathematical science pertaining to the collection, analysis,
interpretation or explanation, and presentation of data. You will collect data from at least 20 people and
analyse the data you collect. You will display the analysed data on a large poster board or PowerPoint.
This will be due _____________, and you will present your findings to the class, this will be for your final
unit test grade for unit 6 and 16.

You will ask at least 20 people each of the questions below. This means that you ask 20 people 4
questions; you do not ask 80 people one question. You will add and ask an additional 2 to 5 questions.
1) How old are you?
2) How tall are you?
3) What is your favourite colour?
4) How many people live in your house?

Analyse the data you collect. You will apply the following statistical methods to the data collected for
each question:
1) mean
2) median
3) mode
4) range

Each poster/PP should include all of these displays of data:

1) Pie Chart 3) Waffle diagram
2) Two way table 4) Compound/ Dual Bar chart
Attached is a rubric which will be used to grade each poster.
Errors using inadequate data are much less than those using no
data at all.
~Charles Babbage
