Topic: User Interfaces
Sub-Topic: Types, Merits and Demerits of User Interfaces
Objective: Students will be able to identify common user interfaces
and choose a suitable one for a given scenario.
Previous Knowledge: Operating Systems.

Background

• What is a Human Computer Interface (HCI)?


HCI describes the interaction between a user and a
computer; in other words, the method by which the user
tells the computer what to do and the responses that the
computer makes.
*Remember that the term ‘computers’ is not limited to
microcomputers. What are some other examples of
computers?

Background

• Why is good Human Computer Interface (HCI) design


important?
It ensures that users can carry out their tasks:
❑Safely
❑Effectively
❑Efficiently
❑Enjoyably
As such, it can improve our productivity and quality of life.

Command Line Interface (CLI)

• This is the first interactive dialogue style.


• It allows direct expression of instructions to the computer
using single character, whole word commands or
abbreviations through input via a keyboard.
• Little help is provided to the user with CLI.
• Commands enable the user to quickly and concisely
instruct the computer what to do but they require the user
to have a knowledge of the commands available and the
syntax for using them.

Menu

There are different types of menu interfaces. Each of them


displays options for tasks and actions you can perform:
➢Pull-down menu – This is displayed along the top of the
screen and when the user clicks on an item, a submenu
appears. The menu is always present despite the screen
the user is looking at in the application.
➢Example: File, Home, Insert etc. in MS Word

Menu

There are different types of menu interfaces cont’d:


➢Pop-up Menu aka Context Menu – This menu pops up in
response to a specific action carried out by the user such
as a right click on a particular area of the screen. It usually
appears right where the cursor is on the screen.

Graphical User Interface

• The GUI is now the standard computer interface.


• It enables the user to communicate with a computer through
the use of visual elements in the form of WIMP:
1. Windows: Rectangular boxed areas on the screen that holds
a group of icons.
2. Icons: Small images which, when clicked, lead to something
else.
3. Menus
4. Pointers: Show the movement of pointing devices e.g. cursors
show mouse movement.

Touch User Interface

This allows users to interact with the screen as both an input


and output device simultaneously.
