Q2 - Module 2 Lesson 2
Q2 - Module 2 Lesson 2
The Philippines is located in the western part of the North Pacific Ocean. This vast area
encompasses many countries in Oceania and the eastern parts of Asia. Tropical cyclones can
form over warm waters anywhere within this area. This poses a significant challenge to the
forecasters in different countries within this region. To make monitoring easy for the forecasters,
this large region of the Pacific Ocean is broken into smaller domains called "areas of
responsibilities". Here, forecasters will only have to monitor those TCs that are relevant to their
country.
In the activity (it will be done during face-to-face session), the Philippine Area of
Responsibility (PAR) is the geographical area where tropical cyclones are monitored in the
Philippines. The PAR includes a big area at the east part of the Philippines because this is where
most tropical cyclones come from.
In the map below, the bold line marks the boundary of the Philippine Area of
Responsibility. The latitude and longitude of each corner is also shown.
The boundaries of the PAR are established using specific latitude and longitude
coordinates.
Latitude and Longitude in the PAR
• Latitude: The PAR extends from approximately 5°N to 25°N. This means it covers a
range of latitudes starting from just above the equator up to the northern limits of the
Philippines.
• Longitude: The eastern boundary is around 135°E, while the western boundary extends
to about 120°E.
Once a typhoon enters the PAR, PAGASA is responsible for tracking its development,
movement, and potential impact on the Philippines. This includes issuing regular updates and
warnings to the public regarding the cyclone's status.
Trivia!
According to PAGASA, the peak of the typhoon season is July through October, when nearly
70% of all typhoon develop.
Summary
• The Philippines is located in the western part of the North Pacific Ocean.
• This region is prone to tropical cyclones due to warm waters.
• To aid forecasters, the Pacific Ocean is divided into smaller regions called
"areas of responsibilities."
• The Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) is where tropical cyclones are
monitored in the Philippines.
• The PAR covers a large area in the eastern part of the Philippines, where most
storms originate.
• Boundaries of the PAR:
Latitude: Extends from 5°N to 25°N
Longitude: Ranges from 120°E to 135°E.
3. What is the purpose of dividing the Pacific Ocean into "areas of responsibilities"?
A) To help forecasters monitor tropical cyclones relevant to their country
B) To make it easier for fishers to find fish
C) To manage shipping routes
D) To create tourist zones
True or False
7. The eastern boundary of the PAR is around 135°E.

9. Most tropical cyclones that affect the Philippines come from the west.
10. The PAR includes areas to the north of the Philippines.
