Learning Competencies

At the end of the lesson, the student should be able to:

explain what it means to evaluate an algebraic expression

through examples;

Learning Competencies
At the end of the lesson, the student should be able to:

develop an appreciation for the process of evaluating

algebraic expressions by relating it to the practice of
examining and testing their own faith, as encouraged in 2
Corinthians 13:5.
How do you
evaluate
mathematical
expressions?
Example 1: Evaluate
3𝑥 − 2𝑦 + 4
if 𝑥 = 2 and 𝑦 = 4.
Evaluate 3𝑥 − 2𝑦 + 4 if 𝑥 = 2 and 𝑦 = 4.
3𝑥 − 2𝑦 + 4
Substitute 𝑥 = 2 and 𝑦 = 4.
3 2 −2 4 +4
Perform the operations.
6−8+4
−2 + 4
𝟐
Example 2:
If 𝑎 = 2 and 𝑏 = −3,
evaluate
3 2
5𝑎 𝑏 .
If 𝑎 = 2 and 𝑏 = −3, evaluate 3 2
5𝑎 𝑏 .
3
5𝑎 𝑏 2

Substitute 𝑎 = 2 and 𝑏 = −3.

3 2
5 2 −3
Perform the operations.
5 8 9
40 9
𝟑𝟔𝟎
Example 3:
Evaluate
(𝑥 + 𝑦)2

if 𝑥 = 4 and 𝑦 = 8.
Evaluate (𝑥 + 𝑦)2 if 𝑥 = 4 and 𝑦 = 8.
𝑥+𝑦 2

Substitute 𝑥 = 4 and 𝑏 = 8.
4+8 2

Perform the operations.

Example 4:
Evaluate
2
𝑎 + 𝑏 –𝑐 3

when 𝑎 = 1, 𝑏 =– 2, and 𝑐 =– 3.
Evaluate 𝑎 + 2
𝑏 –𝑐 3

when 𝑎 = 1, 𝑏 =– 3, and 𝑐 =– 2.
Substitute 𝑎 = 1, 𝑏 = −3 and 𝑐 = −2.
2 3
1 + −3 − −2
Perform the operations.
1 + 9 − −8
10 + 8
𝟏𝟖
Example 5:
Evaluate
2
𝑎 − 2𝑏
if 𝑎 = −1 and 𝑏 = 3.
Evaluate 𝑎 2− 2𝑏 if 𝑎 = −1 and 𝑏 = 3.
Substitute 𝑎 = −1 and 𝑏 = 3.
2
−1 − 2 3
Perform the operations.

Absolute Value
represents the distance of a number
from zero on the number line,
regardless of direction.

It's denoted by two vertical bars

around the number.
Absolute Value
the absolute value is always non-
negative.
Example:
−𝟏 = 𝟏
𝟏 =𝟏
To evaluate an algebraic expression
means to find the value of the expression
when the variable is replaced by a given
number. To evaluate an expression, we
substitute the given number for the variable
in the expression and then simplify the
expression using the order of operations.
“Examine yourselves as to
whether you are in the faith.
Test yourselves. Do you not
know yourselves, that Jesus
Christ is in you? —unless
indeed you are disqualified.”
2 Corinthians 13:5
1. Evaluate – 4
𝑎 2

when 𝑎 = – 3.
2. Evaluate 2
2𝑥 𝑦
when 𝑥 = 5 and 𝑦 = 2.
3. Evaluate 𝑥𝑦– 𝑧
if 𝑥 =– 3, 𝑦 = 4, and 𝑧 = 5.
4. Evaluate 𝑎(4 – 𝑏)
1
if 𝑎 = 2 and 𝑏 = .
2
5. If 𝑥 = 3 and 𝑦 = 4,
𝑥𝑦−4
then − 3 = _____.
−2
6. If 𝑥 = 16 and 𝑦 = 9,
then
2
𝑥 + 𝑦 − 𝑥 + 𝑦 = _____.
7. Evaluate
𝑥−𝑦
𝑥+𝑦
if 𝑥 = −2 and 𝑦 = 3.
8. If x = 2 and y = 1, then
2𝑥𝑦−4 2
+ 2𝑥 − 3𝑥𝑦 − 6 = _____.
