WRITTEN BY: ABDUL MOIZ | DAY 1/15 OF LEARNING DEVOPS FROM ZERO

A DETAILED DEVOPS ROADMAP

FIRST LEARN THEN EARN

DevOps is a culture and set of practices that bridges the gap between software
development (Dev) and IT operations (Ops). It aims to improve collaboration,
efficiency, and continuous delivery of high-quality software. For beginners,
understanding DevOps can be overwhelming, but with the right roadmap, you
can systematically learn the key concepts, tools, and practices to excel in the
field.
1

1. THE KEY PHASES OF DEVOPS LEARNING

Phase 1: Version Control (Git)
Learn how to use Git for managing and tracking code changes. Understanding
version control is essential for collaborating with teams in DevOps workflows.
Key topics include:

● Git basics (commit, push, pull, branching)

● Working with GitHub/GitLab/Bitbucket
● Git workflows (GitFlow, Forking)

Phase 2: Continuous Integration (Jenkins)

Jenkins is a popular tool for CI/CD pipelines. Learn how to automate the process
of building, testing, and integrating code changes:

● Jenkins pipelines and job configurations

● Automated testing with Jenkins
● Integrating Jenkins with Git
2

Phase 3: Infrastructure as Code (Terraform/Ansible)

IaC allows you to manage infrastructure through code. Terraform and Ansible
are widely used tools in this space:

● Terraform basics: managing infrastructure in the cloud (AWS, Azure, GCP)

● Writing Ansible playbooks for automation
● Using Terraform with modules for large-scale setups

Phase 4: Containerization (Docker)

Containers simplify the deployment of applications by packaging code,
dependencies, and environment configurations. Learn the basics of Docker:

● Creating and managing Docker containers

● Writing Dockerfiles
● Docker Compose for multi-container applications
3

Phase 5: Orchestration (Kubernetes)

Kubernetes is a powerful tool for automating the deployment, scaling, and
management of containerized applications:

● Understanding Kubernetes architecture

● Creating Kubernetes clusters
● Managing services, pods, and deployments

Phase 6: Cloud Services (AWS, Azure, GCP)

Familiarize yourself with cloud platforms that host modern applications:

● AWS core services (EC2, S3, Lambda)

● Azure fundamentals (VMs, AKS)
● GCP basics (App Engine, Compute Engine)
4

2. UNDERSTANDING DEVOPS CONCEPTS

Before diving into tools, it’s essential to understand the foundational
concepts of DevOps:

● CI/CD (Continuous Integration & Continuous Delivery): The

core practice of integrating code changes regularly and
delivering them automatically.
● Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Managing and provisioning
infrastructure through machine-readable scripts.
● Automation: A key aspect of DevOps, enabling efficiency and
repeatability in development, testing, and deployment
processes.
● Monitoring and Logging: Ensuring application performance and
stability through real-time insights and historical analysis.
● Collaboration & Communication: Breaking silos between
development, operations, and security teams for seamless
collaboration.

3. DEVOPS TOOLS YOU SHOULD LEARN

● Source Code Management: Git
● CI/CD: Jenkins, GitLab CI
● Infrastructure as Code: Terraform, Ansible
● Containerization: Docker
● Orchestration: Kubernetes
● Monitoring: Prometheus, Grafana
● Cloud: AWS, Azure, GCP
5

4. MONITORING AND LOGGING

Once your application is deployed, monitoring and logging ensure everything is
working as expected:

● Monitoring: Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog

● Logging: ELK Stack (Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana)

5. SECURITY (DEVSECOPS)
Security is becoming increasingly important in DevOps. Familiarize yourself with
tools that integrate security into your pipeline:

● Tools: Snyk, Trivy for container security, HashiCorp Vault for secrets
management
● Shift Left: Incorporating security checks early in the development
process.
6

Build Your DevOps Skills Consistently

DevOps is a dynamic field, and it's essential to stay updated with the latest
practices and tools. As you follow this roadmap, always aim for practical
implementation of the tools you learn, such as deploying applications on cloud
platforms or automating tasks with Jenkins.
