Course Title: Optical Fiber Communications
Course Type: Theoretical
Rationale:
This course covers the theoretical part of optical communication. After completion of
this course, the students will get the knowledge of optical link design to meet the ever
increasing bandwidth demand of communication network. In particular, this course
contents focus on optical ray theory, propagation modes, types of optical fibers, loss
and impairments of optical communication, optical sources and detector, power budget
and advanced optical networks.
Course Content:
Light Propagation through Optical Fiber: Overview of Optical Fiber Communication,
Ray Propagation in Optical Fibers, Optical Fiber Types. Modes in Optical Fibers and
their Intensity Patterns, LP Modes, Dispersion Relations and Mode Cutoff. Fiber
materials and Fabrication Techniques. Fiber Losses and Dispersion. Non-linear effects:
SPM, XPM, FWM.
Optical Sources and Detectors: Sources: Semiconductor LEDs and Lasers, Spectral
Width, Efficiency, Modulation Characteristics, Materials and Fabrication. Detectors:
Semiconductor Photodiodes, PIN diodes, APDs, Noise characteristics, Receiver
systems and their SNR Analysis.
Fiber Optic Links: Source to Fiber Coupling, Lensing Schemes, Fiber to fiber Coupling
and Splicing Techniques, Misalignment, Fiber Optic Couplers. Power Budget and Rise-
Time Budget Analysis. Line Coding Formats.
System Measurements: Fiber Attenuation and Dispersion measurement, OTDR, LED
and photodiode Characteristics. Eye Pattern Technique.
Optical Networks: Fiber Optic Data Buses and LANs. Protocol and Architecture.
Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM). SONET/SDH. FTTH.
