CHAPTER 2

Addition and Subtraction of Large Numbers

* Addition is the process to find the sum of two or more numbers.

* The symbol ‘+’ plus is used when we add numbers.

* Addends – The numbers that are being added.

* Sum – The result of adding addends.

Addition Facts:

• When we add 0 to a number, the answer is number itself.


Example: 52+ 0 = 52
• When we add 1 to a number, the answer is number just after it.
Example: 72+1 =73
• Numbers added in any order give the same answer.
Example: 33 + 3 = 3 + 33 = 36

We carry forward the numbers to the next higher place value, if the sum of the digits in any place is more than 9.

I. Solve the following word problems.

a. A city has 5,12,180 men, 4,00,350 women and 17,160 children .What is the total population of the city ?
