REVISION
I. Introduction
You should paraphrase the question using the structure:
GRAPH TYPE + VERB + WHAT + WHERE + WHEN
E.g., Question:
The bar chart shows the percentage of men and women doing regular physical activity in Australia in 2010.
Type Verb What Where When

Question The bar chart shows the percentage in Australia in 2010

of men and
women doing
regular physical
activity

Paraphrased The bar chart compares the proportion of Australian men in 2010
and women across six different
age groups participating in
regular physical activity

Other paraphrasing technique using “how something varies (varied)”

activity varied across six different age groups in 2010.
KEY TASK FOR TODAY’S LESSON

The first chart shows how energy is used in an average Australian household. The second chart shows the
greenhouse gas emissions which result from this energy use.
Task 2. Fill in the table to complete the introduction
Task 3. Write an introduction to the following graphs

The charts below show the most popular films by genre for men and women and general ticket sales for
different types of film in the USA in 2010. Summaries the information by selecting and reporting the main
features and make comparisons where relevant.

II. Overview
Look for highest/ lowest figures and/ or biggest/ smallest gaps.

Overall, what stands out from the charts is that there is not a clear relationship between energy consumption
and emissions. Although heating consumes the most energy, water heating is responsible for the highest
percentage of greenhouse gas emissions.
Task 4. Now write an overview of the graphs in Task 3.
III. The body
There are two approaches to write the body

• subject-based division (describe each chart in one body paragraph)

• category-based division (divide all categories into two groups)
SUBJECT-BASED DIVISION
Task 5. Read the following two versions of the body and answer the following questions.
1. Which version provides a more detailed breakdown of energy consumption?
2. Which version makes better use of comparative language?
3. Which version connects energy use to greenhouse gas emissions more effectively?

CATEGORY-BASED DIVISION
Task 6. Choose the correct answer to complete the paragraph
Key language:
1. Make up X%
Example: Online sales make up 45% of the company's revenue.
2. Represent X%
Example: Female employees represent 60% of the workforce.
3. Comprise X%
Example: Renewable energy sources comprise 25% of the total energy production.
4. Form X%
Example: Imports form 30% of the total goods traded.
5. Occupy X%
Example: Urban areas occupy 15% of the land.
6. Account for X%
