Tutorial # 5: Shear Force and Bending Moment Diagrams (SFD, BMD)

1) Draw the SFD and BMD of the beam in Figure 1 using the Method of sections.

Figure 1

2) Draw the SFD and BMD for the beams shown in Figures 2a and 2b. Use the area method
(relationship between load – V- M) for your solutions. Find the maximum and minimum value
of shear force and bending moments. Also, find the points of contraflexure wherever applicable.
Note: A point of contraflexure is defined as the point(s) along the beam where bending moment
changes sign.

Autumn – 2023
Tutorial # 5: Shear Force and Bending Moment Diagrams - Solution
1) Draw the SFD and BMD of the beam in Figure 1 using the Method of sections.

Figure 1

Solution:

Using Method of Sections

1 2 3 4 22 kN/m
90 kN 54 kN

𝐴 𝐵 𝐶 𝐷 𝐸

1.8 𝑚 2.4 𝑚 3𝑚 𝑎 2.4 𝑚

𝑅𝐴 = 81.2 𝑘𝑁
𝑅𝐷 = 115.6 𝑘𝑁

𝑅𝐴 + 𝑅𝐷 = 90 + 54 + (22 × 2.4)

𝑅𝐴 + 𝑅𝐷 = 196.8 kN

Taking moment at A

2.4
𝑅𝐷 × (1.8 + 2.4 + 3) − (90 × 1.8) − 54 × (1.8 + 2.4) − 22 × 2 (7.2 + )=0
2

Solving the above two equations we get

𝑅𝐷 = 115.6 kN

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CE 203 (Autumn 2023): Tutorial # 5 - Solution

𝑅𝐴 = 81.2 kN

Now we draw SFD and BMD of the given beam using method of sections

Taking x from left end

𝑀 = 𝑅𝐴 × 𝑥
b) 𝑆𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 2 − 𝐵 < 𝑥 < 𝐶

𝑀 = 𝑅𝐴 × 𝑥 − 90 × (𝑥 − 1.8)
c) 𝑆𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 3 − 𝐶 < 𝑥 < 𝐷
𝑉 = 𝑅𝐴 − 90 − 54 = −62.8 kN
𝑀 = 𝑅𝐴 × 𝑥 − 90 × (𝑥 − 1.8) − 54 × (𝑥 − 1.8 − 2.4)

Solution for the beam shown in Figures 2a

Internal moment-
releasing hinge

Figure 2a
At C there is a moment release hinge so we separate the structure into two parts as shown
below to find reactions at A and B

For Part 2:

Taking moment at C and equating it to zero we get

1 × 12 × 6 1 × 6
𝑀 @ 𝐶 = 0 = (𝑅𝐵 × 6) − ( × )
2 3
𝑅𝐵 = 12 kN
For Part 1:
1
𝑅𝐴 + 𝑅𝐵 = × 9 × 12 = 54 kN
2
𝑅𝐴 = 54 − 12 = 42 kN

CE 203 (Autumn 2023): Tutorial # 5 - Solution
IIT BOMBAY

Taking moment at C and equating it to zero we get

1 × 3 × 12 1 × 3
𝑀 @ 𝐶 = 0 = 𝑀𝐴 + (𝑅𝐴 × 3) − ( × )
2 3
𝑀𝐴 = (−42 × 3) + 18 = − 108 kN-m
Shear Force Diagram:

The loading is linear for the whole beam i.e. from A-C and C-B, hence the shear force
diagram will be quadratic.

2
𝑉𝐶 − 42 = −18
𝑉𝐶 = 24 𝑘𝑁
𝑑𝑉
Slope at B is zero i. e. =0
𝑑𝑥
Shear force at B is -12 kN
From C to B the slope increases from -12 to 0 hence the profile is concave down.

Since V is quadratic, M will be cubic.

Slope at A is 42 and slope at C is 24.

2
𝑀𝐶 − 𝑀𝐴 = (24 × 3) + ( × (42 − 24) × 3) = 108 kN-m
3

Moment at C is zero since there is a moment release hinge at that point.

𝑉𝐶,𝑟 = −30 kN

Slope remains same before and after at jump at C because loading diagram is continuous at

2
To find MC, you cannot do 𝑀𝐶,𝑙 − 𝑀𝐴 = × (Area of rectangle) because slope at point C
3
should be zero (here slope is 40 at one end and 20 at other).
So, find M just to the right of C from area method – Right to Left.

Slope at just to right of C = −30 (∵ 𝑉𝐶,𝑟 = −30 kN)

There is no point of contraflexure in the beam.
