What is Audiological evaluation ?

An Audiological evaluation is a series of diagnostic

procedures used to determine the type, degree, and

configuration of hearing loss. The goal of this evaluation is to

develop a treatment plan that is unique to the patient's

needs in order to improve their communication skills.


What is importance of Audiological
management?

o It requires devices such as hearing aids or cochlear

implants to enhance and monitor the hearing capabilities of

children with hearing loss and facilitate their auditory-verbal

training.
Types of Tests Used to Evaluate Hearing in Children and
Adults

o Pure-Tone Audiometry Test.

o Speech Testing.

o Tests of the Middle Ear. (Tympanometry)

o Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR)

o Oto acoustic Emissions (OAEs

o ASSR
Criteria for Getting Cochlear Implant

o Cochlear implants are designed for people with moderate to

severe sensorineural hearing loss (loss due to damage in the

inner ear) who have difficulty interpreting speech even with a

hearing aid. A cochlear implant may be right for those who:

Struggle to understand speech even with hearing aids that are

properly fitted.

o Ideal age for getting cochlear implant is till 4 years.


Principles of Listening and Spoken Language—
Auditory-Verbal Therapy
1. Promote early diagnosis of hearing impairment in newborns,
infants, toddlers, and children, followed by immediate audiologic
management and Auditory-Verbal therapy.
2. Recommend immediate assessment and use of appropriate, state-of-the-art
hearing technology to obtain maximum benefits of auditory stimulation.
3. Guide and coach parents* to help their child use hearing
as the primary sensory modality in developing spoken
language.
4. Guide and coach parents to become the primary facilitators of their
child’s listening and spoken language development through active
consistent participation in individualized Auditory-Verbal therapy.
5.Create environments that support listening for the
acquisition of spoken language throughout the child’s daily
activities.
6. Guide and coach parents to help their child integrate
listening and spoken language into all aspects of the
child’s life.

7. Guide and coach parents to use natural developmental
patterns of audition, speech, language, cognition, and
communication.
8. Guide and coach parents to help their child self-monitor
spoken language through listening.
9. Administer ongoing formal and informal diagnostic assessments to
develop individualized Auditory-Verbal treatment plans, to monitor
progress, and to evaluate the effectiveness of the plans for the child
and family.
10. Promote education in regular classrooms with typical
hearing peers and with appropriate support services from
early childhood onwards.
