Week 2 Group Work Online Math 126

Sections 1.1, 1.2, 1.4

𝑓(𝑥 + ℎ) − 𝑓(𝑥)
1. If f(x) = -2x2 - 3x + 8, find ℎ

2. Consider 3 mappings:

The mapping F from a set of horses to another set of horses where F maps a horse to its biological father. EX:
F(Ta Wee) = Intentionally means that the horse named Intentionally is the biological father of Ta Wee.

The mapping B from a set of horses to another set of horses where B maps a horse to a biological offspring.
EX: B(Man o' War)=War Admiral means that Man o' War is the biological parent of War Admiral.

The mapping A maps a horse to its age. EX: A(Life Is Good) = 4 would mean Life is Good is 4 years old.

● Is the mapping F a function or not? Explain

● Is the mapping B a function or not? Explain

● What does A(Rich Strike) = 3 mean?

● What does A(F(Epicenter))=8 mean?

3. An open box is to be made from a rectangular piece of cardboard 12 inches by 20 inches by cutting out
a square from each corner and turning up the sides.

a) Express the volume V of the box as a function of the length x

of the side of the square cut from each corner. (Do not multiply
out your function.)

b) What is the volume if a 4-inch square is cut out?

c) What is the volume if a 7-inch square is cut out?

d) What is the implied/applied domain of V(x)?

Use your GC or Desmos to complete the following. Approximate to the nearest hundredth.

e) For what value of x is V largest? f) What is the max volume?

4. Give the domain and range of the function whose graph is shown:
5. The height of a cannon ball H (in feet above the ground) is a function of T, the amount of time (in
seconds) the ball has been in the air. We have H=f(T)

The vertical intercept (i.e. the y-intercept) for this graph represents what?

Explain/interpret the statement f(3) = 9

6. Do the following by hand on paper.

a. Graph the piecewise defined function.

b.Give any x-intercept(s).

c. Give any y-intercept(s).

d. What is the domain? e. Find f(-3)

f. Find f(0) g. Find f(7.5)

7. We produce 80 mattresses at a cost of $135,000 and 125 mattresses at a cost of $202,500.

a. Find a linear function, C(x), that describes the cost to produce x mattresses.

b. What is the applied/implied domain?

c. What are the start-up costs?

d. Give the rate of change of the line and interpret it.

e. Find the cost to produce 95 mattresses.

f. How many can be produced for $784,000?

8. For the function shown to the right, give the intervals (using interval notation) when the function is

a. Increasing

b. Decreasing

c. Constant

9. Consider the function g(x) = -2x2 - 5x - 3.

a) Complete the square to get the function in vertex form and state the vertex & axis of symmetry

b) The graph opens UP / DOWN. Explain.

c) Vertex will be the absolute min or max. Explain.

d) How many x-intercepts will there be? Explain how you know (without looking at the graph or finding the
intercepts)

e) Find all intercepts. (Be sure you can show all 3 ways to get the x-intercepts?)

f) By hand, plot intercepts, vertex, and then graph (once

you’re done doing it by hand, check your answers using
technology.
g) Solve g(x) ≥ 0. (We always solve quadratic inequalities algebraically using a sign diagram unless
the directions say otherwise.)

10. A rectangle is bound by the x-axis and the y-axis with a vertex on line P as shown.

a) What base and height should the rectangle have in order to

produce the rectangle with the maximum area?

b) What is the maximum area?
