Instrumentation

The Rite of Spring uses a very large orchestra with some


unusual instruments. There are almost 100 people on percussion:
stage playing the piece. Here is a list of the instruments - timpani (2 players, with a minimum of 5
used: drums including a piccolo timpano)
- bass drum
woodwinds: - Cymbals
- piccolo, 3 flutes (3rd doubling piccolo 2), alto flute - tam-tam
- 4 oboes (4th doubling cor anglais 2), cor anglais - crotales (antique cymbals) in A-flat and
- clarinet in E-flat and D, 3 clarinets in B-flat, A (3rd B-flat
doubling bass clarinet 2), bass clarinet - Triangle
- 4 bassoons (4th doubling contrabassoon 2), - Tambourine
contrabassoon - guiro

brass: strings:
- 8 horns in F (7th and 8th doubling Wagner tubas in B- - violins i, ii (16), (14)
flat), - violas (12)
- trumpet in D, 4 trumpets in C (4th doubling bass - violoncellos (10)
trumpet in E-flat), - double basses (8)
- 3 trombones,
- 2 tubas
