Re su lts: Winte r whea t exhibited ea rlier sp ring gree n- up than alfalfa and ma intained do minance du ring
co - growth. Over the fo ur se aso ns , I21, I42, and I84 resu lted in whea t yield (bas ed on the whea t strip
area ) increa se s of 19.0%, 16.7%, and 24.0%, resp ec tively, unde r HN , and 34.1%, 31.9%, and 43.4% un-
de r LN. Alfalfa growth was co nstrained du ring co - growth bu t reco vered afte r the whea t harvest. Al-
falfa in I42 and I84 ma intained fo rag e yield (bas ed on the alfalfa strip area ) as high as SA. Inte rcrop -
ping increa se d whea t NU E unde r bo th N co ndition s bu t did no t sig nificantly affect alfalfa NU E. I84 at-
tained the high es t LER of 1.01–1.14 and 1.11–1.25 unde r HN and LN resp ec tively. Ne t reven ue of I84

was lower than SA bu t three time s high er than SW .


Co nc lusion : Wide - strip whea t/alfalfa inte rcrop with low- N sh owed the be st pe rfo rma nce, which is
prom ising in diversifying farming syste m and improving ag ricultural su stainab ility.
