AC CIRCUIT

1. A series circuit consisting of a 12 Ω resistance, a 110 µF capacitor and a 50 mH inductor are


connected across a 24 V, 50 Hz power source.
Compute
a) the capacitance and inductance reactance (3 marks)
b) the impedance (3 marks)
c) the current in the circuit (1 mark)
d) voltage across capacitor and inductor (3 marks)

Answer : a) Xc = 28.9 Ω ; XL = 15.7 Ω


b) Z = 17.8 Ω ;
c) I = 1.35 A;
d) VC = 39 V ; VL = 21 V

2. An LRC series circuit consisting of an inductor L = 32 mH, a resistor R = 8.7 kΩ and a capacitor
C = 6250 pF are connected across a 10 kHz, 725 V (rms) source.
Determine
a) the reactance XL and XC (4 marks)
b) the impedance Z (2 marks)
c) the phase angle (2 marks)
d) the power factor (2 marks)
e) the Irms (2 marks)

Answer : a) XL = 2011 Ω , XC = 2546 Ω


b) Z = 8716 Ω ;

d) cos Ø = 0.99

3. The following table gives the reactance and rms voltage across the elements of a series RLC
circuit.

4. A coil has an inductance of 0.1 H and resistance of 10 Ω is connected in series with 10 µF


capacitor. It is connected to 110 V, 60 Hz line.

c) the phase angle between current and supply voltage (1 mark)
d) the power factor of the circuit (2 marks)
e) the voltmeter reading across (2 marks)
i) the inductor
ii) the capacitor

Answer : a) Z = 227.8 Ω
b) I = 0.26 A
c) Ø = 87.5o
d) cos Ø = 0.044
e) i) VL = 9.8 V, ii) VC = 68.9 V
