1. RATIONALE:
The ozone layer, a critical component of the Earth's atmosphere, plays a vital role in
protecting life on our planet.
 Importance of Ozone Layer:
1. Protects from UV Radiation: Absorbs 97-99% of harmful ultraviolet (UV)
radiation from the sun.
2. Prevents Skin Cancer: Reduces risk of skin cancer, cataracts, and other health
issues.
3. Preserves Ecosystems: Protects plants, animals, and aquatic life from UV
damage.
4. Maintains Climate: Influences global climate patterns and temperature
regulation.
5. Supports Food Chain: Ensures healthy phytoplankton growth, basis of aquatic
food chains.

 Ozone Layer Depletion:

1. Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs): Released from aerosol cans, refrigerators, and

air conditioners.
2. Halons: Used in fire extinguishers and refrigeration systems.
3. Methane: Released from agriculture, natural gas production, and landfills.
4. Nitrous Oxide: Emitted from agriculture, industrial processes, and fossil fuel
combustion.

 Consequences of Ozone Layer Depletion:

1. Increased UV Radiation: Higher risk of skin cancer, cataracts, and other

health issues.
2. Ecosystem Disruption: Impacts phytoplankton, aquatic life, and entire food
chains.
3. Climate Change: Alters global temperature and precipitation patterns.
4. Economic Impacts: Damage to agriculture, fisheries, and tourism industries.

 International Response:

1. Montreal Protocol (1987): Phased out CFCs and other ozone-depleting

substances.
2. Vienna Convention (1985): Established framework for ozone layer
protection.
3. United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP): Coordinates global ozone
layer protection efforts.

 Individual Actions:

1. Use Eco-Friendly Products: Choose products with minimal ozone-depleting

potential.
2. Properly Dispose of Hazardous Waste: Ensure safe disposal of CFC-
containing appliances.
3. Support Ozone-Friendly Policies: Advocate for policies promoting ozone
layer protection.
4. Raise Awareness: Educate others about ozone layer importance and depletion.
