Assignment 1# Physical Topology

Eng: Ahmed Maber

By: Amr Mohammed ElMorshidy

Types of Physical
Topology

1. Bus Topology: A bus topology is multipoint. One long cable

acts as a backbone to link all the devices in the network.

2. Ring Topology: A signal is passed along the ring in one

direction, Until it reaches its destination.

3. Mech Topology: Every device has a dedicated point to

point link to every other device.

4. Star Topology: Each device has a dedicated point to point

link only to a central controller, called a Hub.

ADVANTAGES Bus Topology

• Ease of installation.

• Less cabling than mesh or star topology.

• Difficult reconnection and fault isolation.

DISADVANTAES

• It is difficult to add new devices.

• Signal reflection at the tap can cause degradation in
quality.
• A fault or break can stop all the transmission

Ring topology
• Relatively easy to install and reconfigure.
ADVANTAGES

• To add or delete a device requires changing only two

connections.
• Fault isolation is simplified.
• If one device does not receive a signal within a
specified period, it can issue an alarm.
DISADVANTAES

• Unidirectional.

• A break in the ring can disable the entire network.

Mech Topology

• Eliminating the traffic load problems.

ADVANTAGES

• A mesh topology is robust. If one links become

unusable it does not incapacitate the entire system.
• High privacy and security.
• Point-to-point links make fault identification and fault
isolation easy.
DISADVANTAES

• The amount of cabling and the number of I/O ports

required are huge.
• Installation and reconnection are difficult.
• It is really hard to apply.

Star Topology
• It is less expensive than mesh topology.
DISADVANTAES ADVANTAGES

• It is easy to install and configure.

• It is robust. If one link fail. All other links remain active.
• Easy fault identification and isolation.
• It does not allow direct traffic between devices.

• The dependency of whole topology on one single

point.
