Problem Statement

Underdeveloped drainage systems in the Accra metropolis causes flooding during heavy rainfall
or periods of prolonged precipitation.
The lack of proper and efficient drainage systems in Accra poses a significant challenge to the
well-being and livelihoods of its inhabitants. During heavy rainfall or periods of prolonged
precipitation, the city's existing drainage infrastructure proves insufficient, resulting in flooding
and subsequent waterlogging in various areas. These conditions contribute to a range of
problems such as property damage, displacement of residents, increased health risks,
disruptions to transportation, and economic losses.

Research Questions and Hypothesis

What are the key factors contributing to poor drainage in Accra?

1. The lack of proper planning and maintenance of drainage infrastructure is a major
contributing factor to poor drainage in Accra.
2. The rapid and unplanned urbanization of Accra has led to an increase in impervious
surfaces, which has decreased the ability of the city's drainage system to absorb
rainwater.
3. The dumping of waste in drainage channels and waterways is a significant cause of
blockages, which contributes to flooding.
What kind of technology can be used in curbing the issues of flooding and waterlogging?
1. The use of drones and other remote sensing technologies can be used to map drainage
networks and identify areas that are at risk of flooding.
2. Data analytics can be used to identify patterns of rainfall and flooding, which can be
used to improve the design and maintenance of drainage infrastructure.
3. The use of smart sensors can be used to monitor the performance of drainage systems
and identify potential problems before they cause flooding.
How can technology be used to educate the public about the importance of proper drainage?
1. The use of social media and other online platforms can be used to raise awareness of
the problem of poor drainage and the importance of proper maintenance of drainage
infrastructure.
2. The use of educational games and simulations can be used to teach children about the
importance of drainage and how to prevent flooding.
3. The use of community outreach programs can be used to engage with residents and
encourage them to participate in efforts to improve drainage in their communities.

What are the socio-economic impacts of inadequate drainage systems in Accra and how can
the city improve its infrastructure to mitigate the effects of flooding?
1. Inadequate drainage systems are a major cause of socio-economic problems.

What are the specific health risks associated with flooding and waterlogging?
1. Floods and waterlogged areas are a major risk to health to humans.

What is the relationship between the ineffective waste management systems and
underdeveloped drainage systems in Accra and how do they contribute to flooding?
1. The lack of proper waste management infrastructure and limited resources in Accra
contribute to the ineffective drainage management system.
2. Lack of public awareness and education about the importance of waste management
and its impact on the environment contributes to the choking of open and
underdeveloped drains with refuse.
3. Ineffective enforcement and regulation of waste management policies in Accra
contribute to the choking of open drains with refuse.

McKinsey Problem Solving Framework

What is the problem?

Underdeveloped drainage systems in the Accra metropolis causes flooding during heavy rainfall
or periods of prolonged precipitation.
Where and when does the problem occur?
The problem occurs in the Accra metropolis, particularly during heavy rainfall or periods of
prolonged precipitation. The lack of proper and efficient drainage systems affects the well-
being and livelihoods of the city's inhabitants.

Who is affected?
The residents of Accra metropolis.

What will make a solution successful?

The solution would be successful if it addresses the underdeveloped drainage systems,
improves their efficiency, and prevents flooding and waterlogging in Accra.

What are the boundaries of this problem?

The boundaries of this problem include the current state of the drainage systems in Accra and
the capacity of the city to implement necessary improvements.

Who or what can stop you from implementing the solution?

Various factors can hinder the implementation of the solution, such as lack of funding,
bureaucratic challenges, resistance from stakeholders, and logistical constraints.
