Cyber Laws on Ethics of using Social Media
In today's digital age, social media has become an integral part of our daily lives, it has
changed the way we communicate, share information, and interact with one another. As more
advancements are coming in information technology, resulting in legal considerations and
different legal consequences. It is essential to understand the cyber laws for using the social
media to promote the responsible online behavior and protect the individual’s rights and privacy.
The cyber laws related to use of social media deals with many issues like data privacy,
intellectual property rights, online harassment and defamation etc.
Data privacy: These laws are related to collection, storage and sharing of the personal
information on the social media platforms. These laws help to protect the personal
information and individual rights.
Intellectual property rights: It refers to provide the legal protection to the creative
works, invention or online content of individuals. Social media users sometime share the
content of other people like photos, music, videos or written content, without their
permission. So these intellectual property rights help the individual to protect his works.
It enables the person to take strict legal action against the violators.
Online harassment: It refers to use of digital platform to threaten or harass individuals.
Social media play an important role in promoting this type of behavior due to easy
accessibility and reach. Different laws are made to tackle these issues and strict
punishment are fixed for violators.
Defamation: This is related to making false statements about a person or organization
which harm their reputation in society. Due to social media the defamatory content
spread rapidly and reach millions of people. So different cyber laws related to defamation
are made to balance between the protection of individual’s reputation and freedom of
speech right.
One of the fundamental laws regarding the social media ethics in Pakistan is the Prevention
of Electronic Crimes Act, 2016 (PECA). It covers a wide range of cybercrimes, also those which
are related to social media platforms. It deals with many offenses such as cyberbullying,
harassment, cyberstalking, and defamation which are carried out through electronic means, also
include social media platforms.
Additionally, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) plays an important role
to regulate the content of social media. Under the PTA, the “Removal and Blocking of Unlawful
Online Content (Procedure, Oversight, and Safeguards) Rules, 2021” provide guidelines about
identification and removal of objectionable material from social media platforms. These rules not
only prevent the harmful content but also raise concerns related to censorship and freedom of
expression. Pakistan's Penal Code contains sections regarding the online behavior of the
individuals which may impact social media ethics. For instance, different sections related to
defamation and urging to violence which apply to online communications, also include social
media platforms.
In terms of ethical considerations, the use of social media in Pakistan is also influenced
by cultural and religious norms. While the country embraces freedom of speech, but there are
some sensitive issues such as blasphemy and religious extremism, which can lead to legal
consequences for online activities consider as offensive or inflammatory.
It's important for social media users in Pakistan to be aware of all these laws and
regulations so that they follow the rules and ensure responsible online behavior. Moreover, users
should also follow the community guidelines and terms of service which platforms themselves
often have, these platforms also help in shaping the ethical landscape of social media use.

In conclusion, cyber laws on the ethics of using social media in Pakistan are multi-sided,
encompassing various legislative measures aimed at protecting users' rights, promoting

requires careful balancing of individual freedoms with the need to address online abuse and
harmful content. The social media users should respect the privacy and rights of others people
and don’t use these platforms to harm other personal by their statements.
