A thesis statement is a sentence that sums up the central point of your paper or essay.
It explains to a reader the main idea of the essay, and the writer's opinion on that idea.
The thesis statement is located in the introductory paragraph, almost always at the end
of that paragraph.
The spread of the internet has had a world-changing effect, not least on the world of
education. The use of the internet in academic contexts and among young people more
generally is hotly debated. For many who did not grow up with this technology, its effects
seem alarming and potentially harmful. This concern, while understandable, is
misguided. The negatives of internet use are outweighed by its many benefits for education:
the internet facilitates easier access to information, exposure to different perspectives, and a
flexible learning environment for both students and teachers.
(Ask the students to identify where is the thesis statement in the paragraph above then
procced to the next example.”
EXAMPLE:
Although surveillance is viewed negatively by many people, it has more positive social
effect than negative. Greater surveillance in public areas helps maintain public order and
ensures the personal safety of citizens.
3
The thesis statement represents a promise to the reader that the essay will focus only
on the stated topic; i.e., it limits the scope of the essay.
- In our example above, the writer promises to discuss mainly on the postive effects
of surveillance in public areas. The writer will not discuss its effect on private
areas and institution as it is never stated in the thesis stament. Additionally, we
can expect that the writer will try to emphasize the positives than the negatives
because it is the writer’s position/opinion that the use of surveillance has more
positive effects.
The thesis statement contains two essential elements: (1) the narrow topic and (2) the
writer’s opinion or claim about that topic; i.e., it provides a specific focus for the
reader.
- In our example, the narrow topic the use of surveillance in public places. The
writer’s opinion or claim is that it has more positive effects.
The thesis statement does not contain any specific details, which are reserved for
support in the body paragraphs.
- In our example, the writer offers no facts or details to support the claims of the
positive effects of surveillance. Those specific details will then be discussed in the
body of the essay.
- In the example, if the writer had phrased the thesis as a question, then the
statement would lack a claim or opinion and make no promises of limits or unity.
With very rare exceptions, the thesis statement is not expressed as a promise or
statement of intention
- In our example, it would be inappropriate for the writer to begin the thesis with I
will prove or I intend to. Doing so would suggest that the writer’s claim is still
speculation, rather than an existing truth which the essay will explain and
document.
Very often the thesis statement will include a third element: an essay map/direction.
- The essay map lists the ideas or points the writer will use to support the thesis. An
essay map/direction for the thesis in our example might look like this:
The essay map/direction lists those ideas or points in the order in which they will be
discussed in the essay. In other words, the essay map provides the reader with a map
of the route the essay will travel.
What would you like to find out or decide about your topic?
POSITION: Parents should regulate the amount of time their children spend on mobile
gaming.
------------------------------------------
Now you need to consider why this is your answer and how you will convince your reader to
agree with you. As you read more about your topic and begin writing, your answer should get
more detailed.
The final thesis statement doesn’t just state your position, but summarizes your overall
argument or the entire topic you’re going to explain.
5
Parents should regulate the amount of time their children spend on mobile gaming
because it inhibits social interaction, disctracts their children's studies, and it shortens their
attention spans.
3. Attempting two topics at once (even if they seem related). Pick one and stick with it.
4. Just stating a fact - It should be something you plan to make an argument about.
It should contain a TOPIC (main idea of what you are writing about) and an OPINION
(what your attitude is toward the topic)
The traffic problem in Metro Manila is a multi-sectoral problem that must be solved with the
combined effort of private individuals, foreign tanks, and the government.
THINGS TO CONSIDER:
Too Broad:
ABC is a good school.

and social aspects, making it a good school of choice.

The current government should focus and provide more programs in agriculture,
education, poverty, unemployment, and the rising prices of the basic good, because
these are what they promised to focus and resolve, and the problem in these sectors
are getting worse each day while the people do not see any improvement and actions
that the current government take.
6
Better:
The current government should do better by prioritizing agriculture, education,
poverty, unemployment, and the rising prices of basic goods.
Title:
The Incompetence of our leader.
Better:
Although people say that they are satisfied with his leadership, there are still factors
that would prove that our leader is incompetent.
Fact: The Earth orbits around the Sun once every 365.25 days, which defines
the length of a year in the solar calendar.
Better: The length of a year, defined by the Earth's orbit around the Sun,
influences various aspects of human life and societal structures.
Your thesis will look a bit different depending on the type of essay you’re writing.
But the thesis statement should always clearly state the main idea you want to get
across. Everything else in your essay should relate back to this idea.
People often think all planets are alike, but there are actually three types of planets
in the solar system – terrestrial, gas giants, and planetoids.
The thesis statement contains the main point or argument of a whole essay or research
paper. The topic sentence, on the other hand, contains the main point of a paragraph.
GUIDED PRACTICE 1

generally is hotly debated. For many who did not grow up with this technology, its effects
seem alarming and potentially harmful. This concern, while understandable, is

the internet facilitates easier access to information, exposure to different perspectives, and a
flexible learning environment for both students and teachers.
The teacher will show this sample paragraph and ask the following questions to the
students to ensure they are guided in stating the thesis statement and assessing if they
chose the right thesis statement.
The teacher will group the class into 4 and provide each group a poor thesis
statement and ask them to improve it.

Group 1
Group 2
Group 3
Group 4

and why their version is better.
Valuing question: If you cannot understand the text, could you spot the thesis statement?
How is comprehension or understanding the text helpful in stating the thesis statement?
F. Assessment: (Online)

statement. On a ½ sheet of paper, the students will write their spotted thesis
