Introduction to Kali Linux Purple:

On the 13th of March, 2023, the Kali Linux team announced the availability of a new version of
their security-focused Linux distribution, named “Kali Linux Purple”. The new distribution is
aimed at defensive security. With Kali Purple, you can perform many of the same labs and
testing scenarios as you can with Kali Linux. it's a powerhouse of defensive security tools
designed to protect your data and resources.

In simple words Kali Linux Purple is a modified Debian distribution of Kali Linux which is
designed for cyber defense. It’s the defense equivalent of the Kali Linux penetration testing
platform. it's a new variant of the Kali operating system designed to be used in the cyber
defense role.

However, the tools it holds are focused not on simulating offensive activities but on enabling
defensive activities. This is a key difference as it not only provides workstation tools for the
defense analyst to use, but it also provides a range of open-source cyber defense servers and
services that can be easily set up as part of the cyber defense infrastructure for an organization.
The main focus for the initial launch of Kali Purple has been the delivery of a set of cyber analyst
tools and servers that can be used in the operational environment for activity monitoring and
attack detection, threat hunting, forensics, and incident response.

Exploring the Interface:

Once you have installed Kali Linux Purple and logged in, you will notice that the interface looks
different from the standard Kali Linux interface. Kali Linux Purple uses a purple theme with a
new icon set that makes it easier to navigate through the interface. The interface is clean, sleek,
and modern, providing a great user experience.

Kali Linux & Kali Linux Purple:
The most elementary difference between these two operating systems is the color. But what
can really cause a difference is in the number of tools and resources that each one brings, since
Kali Linux focuses mainly on bringing tools oriented to offensive security operations such as
pentesting and network team while Kali Purple only includes tools for defensive security and
very few for offensive security, more than Kali Purple, it should be called Kali Blue.

One of the significant differences between Kali Linux Purple and standard Kali Linux is that Kali
Linux Purple allows users to customize their desktop environment easily. You can change the
theme, icons, fonts, and even the wallpaper to make Kali Linux Purple more personal. The
ability to customize the interface makes Kali Linux Purple an excellent option for those who
prefer a personalized computing environment.

Kali Purple introduces a suite of new tools that align with the five domains of the NIST
Cybersecurity Framework (CSF): Identify, Protect, Detect, Respond, and Recover. Purple turns
the security engineer’s workstation into a full-fledged security operation center (SOC). his new
Kali release includes over 100 new tools that are focused on defensive security.

Both Kali Linux and Kali Purple are powerful and widely-used tools for cybersecurity
professionals. The choice between the two will come down to your specific needs and goals.
Kali purple is for defensive purposes and Kali linux is for offensive purposes. The difference is
what is pre-installed on the OS, meaning on kali linux you lack defensive tools and on purple
you lack offensive tools.
