UNIT I: MATTER - NATURE AND BEHAVIOUR

Chapter 1. Matter in Our Surroundings


Deinition of matter; solid, liquid and gas; characteristics - shape, volume, density; change
of state-melting (absorption of heat), freezing, evaporation (cooling by evaporation),
condensation, sublimation.
Chapter 2. Is Matter Around Us Pure?
Nature of Matter: Elements, compounds and mixtures. Heterogeneous and
homogeneous mixtures, colloids and suspensions. Physical and chemical changes.

Chapter 3. Atoms and Molecules


Particle Nature and their Basic Units: Atoms and molecules, Law of chemical
combination, Chemical formula of common compounds, Atomic and molecular
masses.

Chapter 4. Structure of the Atom


Structure of Atoms: Electrons, protons and neutrons, valency, Atomic number and
mass number. Isotopes and Isobars.

UNIT II: ORGANISATION IN THE LIVING WORLD

Chapter 5. The Fundamental Unit of Life


Cell - Basic Unit of Life: Cell as a basic unit of life; prokaryotic and eukaryotic
cells, multicellular organisms; cell membrane and cell wall, cell organelles and
cell inclusions; chloroplast, mitochondria, vacuoles, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi
apparatus; nucleus, chromosomes - basic structure, number.

Chapter 6. Tissues
Structure and functions of animal and plant tissues (only four types of tissues in
animals; Meristematic and Permanent tissues in plants).

UNIT III: MOTION, FORCE AND WORK

Chapter 7. Motion

Motion: Distance and displacement, velocity; uniform and non-uniform motion
along a straight line; acceleration, distance-time and velocity-time graphs for
uniform motion and uniformly accelerated motion, elementary idea of uniform
circular motion.

Chapter 8. Force and Newton’s Laws


Force and Newton’s Laws: Force and Motion, Newton’s Laws of Motion, Action
and Reaction forces, Inertia of a body, Inertia and mass, Momentum, Force and
Acceleration.
Chapter 9. Gravitation
Gravitation: Universal Law of Gravitation, Force of Gravitation of the earth (gravity),
Acceleration due to Gravity; Mass and Weight; Free fall.
Floatation: Thrust and Pressure. Archimedes’ Principle; Buoyancy.

Chapter 10. Work, Energy and Power


Work done by a Force, Energy, power; Kinetic and Potential energy; Law of
conservative of energy. (excluding the commercial unit of Energy).

Chapter 11. Sound


Sound: Nature of sound and its propagation in various media, speed of sound,
range of hearing in humans; ultrasound; relection of sound; echo.

UNIT IV: FOOD PRODUCTION

Chapter 12. Improvement in Food Resources


Plant and animal breeding and selection for quality improvement and
management; Use of fertilisers and manures; Protection from pests and diseases;
Organic farming.

PRACTICALS
Practical should be conducted alongside the concepts taught in theory classes.

A. (Unit I Chapter 2) Preparation of:
1. a true solution of common salt,sugar and alum
2. a suspension of soil, chalk powder and ine sand in water
3. a colloidal solution of starch in water and egg albumin/milk in water and
distinguish between these on the basis of

B. (Unit I Chapter 2) Preparation of:


1. A mixture
2.A compound using iron ilings and sulphur powder and distinguishing between
these on the basis of:
• appearance, i.e., homogeneity and heterogeneity

• behaviour towards a magnet

• behaviour towards carbon disulphide as a solvent

• effect of heat

C. (Unit I Chapter 2) Perform the following reactions and classify them as physical or
chemical changes
1. Iron with copper sulphate solution in water
2. Burning of magnesium ribbon in air
3. Zinc with dilute sulphuric acid
4. Heating of copper sulphate crystals
5. Sodium sulphate with barium chloride in the form of their solutions in water.
D. (Unit II Chapter 5) Preparation of stained temporary mounts of (a) onion peel, (b)
human cheek cells & to record observations and draw their labelled diagrams.
E. (Unit II Chapter 6) Identiication of Parenchyma, Collenchyma and Sclerenchyma
tissues in plants, striped, smooth and cardiac muscle ibres and nerve cells in
animals, from prepared slides. Draw their labelled diagrams.
F. (Unit I) Determination of the melting point of ice and the boiling point of water.
G. (Unit III) Veriication of the Laws of Relection of sound.
H. (Unit III Chapter 10) Determination of the density of solid (denser than water) by
using a spring balance and a measuring cylinder.
I. (Unit III Chapter 10) Establishing the relation between the loss in weight of a solid
when fully immersed in
1. Tap water
2. Strongly salty water with the weight of water displaced by it by taking at least
two different solids.
J. (Unit III) Determination of the speed of a pulse propagated through a stretched
string/slinky (helical spring).
K. (Unit III Chapter 3) Veriication of the law of conservation of mass in a chemical
reaction.
