Unit 3: Homes
Audio script:
Hello, and welcome to today’s talk! We’re going to explore different types of homes from around the world. As
you may know, homes come in all shapes and sizes, depending on the environment, culture, and the needs of
the people living in them.
Let’s start with stilt houses. These homes are built on tall supports, or stilts, usually in areas that experience
flooding or heavy rainfall. By raising the house above the ground, stilt houses help protect the people inside
from water and even some animals.
Next, we have eco-houses, which are designed to be environmentally friendly. These homes use materials and
technologies that reduce their impact on the environment, like solar panels or walls made from recycled
materials. Eco-houses are becoming more popular as people become more aware of the need to live sustainably.
Apartments are common in cities where space is limited. These are units within a larger building, often stacked
on top of one another. Many people live in apartments because they’re more affordable in urban areas where
land is expensive.
A bungalow is a single-story house. Bungalows are often chosen by people who prefer not to use stairs or want a
more open, spacious design. They are common in suburban areas where there is more land available.
Then we have detached houses, which are standalone homes not connected to any other buildings. These homes
are often larger, providing more privacy, and are usually found in residential neighborhoods.
Finally, let’s talk about yurts. Yurts are traditional round homes made from wood and fabric, originally used by
nomads in Central Asia. They’re portable, lightweight, and designed to be easily taken down and moved.
Nowadays, yurts are sometimes used as eco-friendly vacation homes or as part of sustainable living projects.
Each of these homes has its own unique purpose and design, depending on the environment and the people
who live in them. Whether it’s a modern apartment in the city or a traditional yurt in the countryside, homes
reflect how people adapt to their surroundings and needs.
