Topic #1 – More Practice Problems
Problem 1:

A Manometer containing mercury is connected to a reactor on one end and open to the
atmosphere on the other end as seen in the figure below. Given that the density of mercury is
𝟏𝟑. 𝟓𝟗𝟔 𝒌𝒈/𝑳 and the reactor is at 𝟐. 𝟒𝟗 𝒂𝒕𝒎 what is the height (h) in meters of the mercury
in the manometer? (Assume the acceleration due to gravity is 𝟗. 𝟖𝟎 𝒎/𝒔𝟐 )
Problem 2:

For 8.15 mol of N2 gas in a reactor with a volume of 1.0 L at 156.1K,

a) Calculate the pressure exerted by the N2 gas using the ideal gas law; [units: atm]
b) Calculate the pressure exerted by the N2 gas using the van der Waals equation; [units: atm]
c) Calculate the compressibility factor of the N2 gas given that the actual pressure exerted by
the gas is 57.419 atm.

𝑳∙𝒂𝒕𝒎
Ideal gas constant: 𝟎. 𝟎𝟖𝟐𝟎𝟔 𝒎𝒐𝒍∙𝑲,
𝒂𝒕𝒎∙𝑳𝟐 𝑳
van der Waals constants for N2: 𝒂 = 𝟏. 𝟑𝟗𝟎 and 𝒃 = 𝟎. 𝟎𝟑𝟗𝟏𝟑 𝒎𝒐𝒍
𝒎𝒐𝒍𝟐
Problem 3:

An ideal gas is held in a cylinder-piston arrangement such as the one shown below. In State 1,
the temperature is 489 K, the pressure is 7.67 atm, and the volume of the gas is 12 liters. The
piston is moved so as to increase the volume in State 2 to 20.0 liters. The temperature in
State 2 is decreased to 397 K. What is the pressure inside the cylinder in State 2?
Problem 4:

For this constant pressure process,

a) What is the work for this process?
b) If 6000 J of heat was added to cause this process what is the change in the internal
energy for this process?
c) Given that we have 1 mol of gas in the piston and its mass is 28.9647 grams what is
the value of the specific heat capacity for this substance?

Answers:
P1. [𝒉 = 𝟏. 𝟏𝟑𝒎]
P2. [𝐚)𝟏𝟎𝟒. 𝟒 𝐚𝐭𝐦 , 𝐛) 𝟔𝟎. 𝟗𝟓 𝐚𝐭𝐦 , 𝐜) 𝐙 = 𝟎. 𝟓𝟓]
P3. [𝟑. 𝟕𝟒 𝐚𝐭𝐦]
P4. [𝐚) − 𝟏𝟕𝟏𝟎𝐉 , 𝐛) 𝟒𝟐𝟗𝟎 𝐉 , 𝐜)𝟏. 𝟎𝟎 𝐉/𝐠 ∙ ℃]
