Setting Out (Layout) of Simple

Circular Curve
Setting out of simple circular curve

There are different methods to set out (Layout or Stake out) the simple
circular curve. Following are two important methods:

1. By offset method or ordinate from long chord method

2. By Deflection Angle method (Rankine’s method or Theodolite method)

Setting out of simple circular curve

1. By offset method or ordinate from long chord method

• In this method Measure Tape is used for the lay out of
simple cure.
• This method is for small radius curve. PI Δ
• First, we calculate all the setting out parameters of
simple curve.
• Then mid ordinate is layout at center of long chord as
shown in sketch.

by following formula: O1 = R 2 − x12 − ( R − O0 )

Ox = R 2 − x 2 − ( R − O0 ) O2 = R 2 − x2 2 − ( R − O0 )

• Finally Other O3 = R 2 − x32 − ( R − O0 )

2. Setting out a Simple circular curve
by deflection angle method
(Rankine’s method) (Theodolite method or Instrument method)
• In this method instrument Theodolite or Total station is used for the layout of
simple cure.
• Accurate method and mostly used method can be used for all types of curve.
• First, we calculate all the setting out parameters of simple curve.
• Then divide the length of curves into small length that is small sub-chords (l). The
length of small sub chords may be 10 to 30 meters. (l= 10 to 30 m).
• Then calculate small deflection Angle (δ) with the help of following formula:
90l1
1 =
R
• Finally Prepare Setting out Table / Sheet for the layout of simple curve
