1 About this Document

1.1 Purpose
The purpose of this document is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the “Annual
Information Statement (AIS)” functionality made available through AIS mobile application of the
Income-tax Department.

In order to promote transparency and simplifying the tax return filing process, CBDT vide Notification
dated May 28, 2020 has amended Form 26AS vide Sec 285BB of Income Tax Act, 1961 r.w.r.114-I of
Income Tax Rules, 1962 w.e.f. 01.06.2020. The new Form 26AS is an Annual Information Statement
or AIS which will provide a complete profile of the taxpayer for a particular year.

Taxpayers will be able to view their information details for a given financial year and submit feedback
against each information.

1.2 Document Conventions


This user guide uses the following conventions:

• Menu items, Options, Dialog boxes and Functions are mentioned in ‘Bold and quotes’
• Error messages are displayed in Italics
• Angle brackets (>) indicate the progression of menu choices the user should select in a
graphical user interface (GUI)
• Note provides additional information

2 Intended Audience
The intended audience is citizens who have carried out transactions during the given financial year
which may lead to liability of filing ITRs under Income-tax Act,1961. Taxpayers will be able to access
AIS Mobile Application by downloading it from Google Play store or Apple App store to view their
Annual Information Statement (AIS), Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS) and submit feedback on
information displayed under AIS.

3 Overview

3.1 About Project Insight


Income Tax Department initiated Project Insight to focus on three goals namely (i) to promote
voluntary compliance and deter noncompliance; (ii) to impart confidence that all eligible persons pay
appropriate tax; and (iii) to promote fair and judicious tax administration. Under this project, an
integrated data warehousing and analytical platform has been rolled out. The project also
operationalizes two centres namely Income Tax Transaction Analysis Centre (INTRAC) and
Compliance Management Centralized Processing Centre (CMCPC).

3.2 About AIS


Annual Information Statement (AIS) is comprehensive view of information for a taxpayer displayed
in Form 26AS. Taxpayer can provide feedback on information displayed in AIS. AIS shows both value
Reported by Source and modified value (i.e., value after considering taxpayer feedback) under each
section (i.e., TDS, SFT, Other information).

The objectives of AIS are:

• Display complete information to the taxpayer with a facility to capture online feedback.
• Promote voluntary compliance and enable seamless prefilling of return.
• Deter non-compliance.

Salient Features of AIS are:


• Inclusion of new information (interest, dividend, securities transactions, mutual fund
transactions, foreign remittance information etc.)
• Use of Data Analytics to populate PAN in non-PAN data for inclusion in AIS.
• Deduplication of information and generation of a simplified Taxpayer Information Summary
(TIS) for ease of filing return (pre-filling will be enabled in a phased manner).
• Taxpayer will be able to submit online feedback on the information displayed in AIS and also
download information in PDF, JSON, CSV file formats.
• AIS Utility will enable taxpayer to view AIS and upload feedback in offline manner.
• AIS Mobile Application will enable taxpayer to view AIS and upload feedback on mobile.

Disclaimer: Annual Information Statement (AIS) includes information presently available with
Income Tax Department. There may be other transactions relating to the taxpayer which are not
presently displayed in Annual Information Statement (AIS). Taxpayer is expected to check all
related information and report complete and accurate information in the Income Tax Return.

3.2.1 AIS Mobile Home Screen


The Annual Information Statement (AIS) home screen provides key components/ functions for AIS
and TIS view. The same can be accessed through Compliance Portal (AIS Homepage).

Following are the key components/functions available on AIS homepage:

(1) General information: User can view their details (Name and PAN) on the Mobile Home
Screen.
(2) AIS Tile: User can view Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS) and Annual Information
Statement (AIS) within this tile.
(3) Left Menu: User can view quick access options (Help Menu, User Manual, Contact Us, Share
App) in the left menu. (Refer AIS Mobile App Left Menu)
(4) Activity History Tab: User can check list of activities performed by taxpayer through this tab.
(Refer Activity History)
(5) Chatbot: User can post queries on the chatbot and can get instant replies/ resolution based
on the frequently asked questions. (Refer Chatbot)

3.3 Accessing AIS through AIS Mobile Application


Users can access the AIS through “AIS Mobile Application’ which can be downloaded through Google
Play store/ Apple App Store as per device.

3.3.1.1 Download AIS Mobile App


User can download the AIS Mobile Application through following steps:

Step 1: On the mobile device, visit Google Play Store or the Apple App Store.
Step 2: Search for “AIS” Mobile App in the search bar (Android) or in the dedicated search section
(iOS).
Step 3: Once the app is displayed, tap the “Install/ Get” option to download it on the device.

3.3.1.2 AIS Mobile Application Registration


Once the AIS mobile application is downloaded and installed on device, user can register on the
same by following the steps below. User needs to ensure that they are already registered on e-filing
portal.

Step 1: On opening the app first time, onboarding screens will be visible from which user can scroll
through by tapping “Next” or skip the screens by tapping “Skip”.

Step 2: Tap on “Get Started” available on the last onboarding screen.

Step 3: Enter PAN and Date of Birth/ Incorporation/Formation to get started with verification.
Provide consent through the checkbox to the terms and conditions to initiate the verification
process.

Note: User needs to be registered on e-filing portal to register on AIS mobile application.

Step 4: Separate OTPs will be shared on primary mobile number and primary email address as
provided in primary details of e-filing profile. Enter the OTPs received and click “Verify”.

Step 5: On entering both OTPs correctly, MPIN set up page will appear. Enter 4-digit MPIN of choice
and click on “Next”.

Note: User will be allowed only 5 attempts to correctly enter the OTPs received. If the user is unable
to enter the correct OTP till the permitted attempts, user account will be locked for 24 hours.

Step 6: Post re-entering the MPIN, click on “Confirm” button to confirm the setup of MPIN.

Step 7: On successful setup of MPIN, user will be successfully registered, and user can login using
the selected MPIN.

3.3.1.3 AIS Mobile Application Login


Once the user is registered on AIS mobile app, user can log in to the AIS Mobile Application using
the following steps:

Step 1: User can login by entering the self-selected MPIN that was created during registration on the
mobile application for the PAN.

In case the MPIN entered is incorrect, user will get a prompt on screen to enter correct MPIN.
Step 2: User is successfully logged in to the AIS Mobile Application.

Note: User will be allowed only 5 attempts to correctly enter the MPIN. If the user is not unable to
enter the correct MPIN till the permitted attempts, user account will be locked for 24 hours. User
can use forgot MPIN to reset the MPIN as shown below to avoid locking of account.

3.3.1.4 Forgot MPIN


In case user forgets MPIN, user can set a new PIN by the following steps:

Step 1: On the login screen, User can tap on “Forgot MPIN” option.

Step 2: Enter PAN and Date of Birth/ Incorporation/Formation to get restarted with verification.

Step 3: Separate OTPs will be shared on primary mobile number and primary email address as
provided in primary details of e-filing profile. Enter the OTPs received and click “Verify”.

Step 4: On entering the correct OTPs, user can set-up new MPIN and then login using the new
MPIN.

3.3.1.5 Device Change


User can only register on a single device at a time. If the user has already registered on a device and
proceed with registration on a new device, registration on the previous device will be deleted.

3.3.1.6 Reset MPIN


User can reset their old MPIN and set a new one through the following steps:

Step 1: Tap on “Settings” from the left menu on the home screen of the AIS mobile application after
logging in and then click on “Change MPIN” option.

Annual Information Statement (AIS) is comprehensive view of information for a taxpayer displayed

4.1 View Annual Information Statement (AIS)


After accessing the AIS Mobile App, user can view the AIS through following steps:

Step 1: On AIS Mobile App home screen, tap on AIS Tile.

Step 2: User can tap on AIS tile to view AIS and TIS. A disclaimer pop-up appears. Click on “Ok”

Step 3: User can select Financial year from tab (Present above the AIS Section) for which the AIS is
to be viewed.

4.1.1 Parts in AIS


Source wise Information is displayed in AIS under following parts, after clicking the AIS tile
from the AIS homepage:

• TDS/TCS Information: Information related to tax deducted/collected at source will be


displayed here. The Information code of the TDS/TCS, Information description and
Information value are visible to the user.
• SFT Information: Under this head information received from reporting entities under SFT are
be displayed here. The SFT code, Information description and Information value are visible.
• Payment of Taxes: Information relating to payment of taxes from different heads are
displayed here. For example, Advance Tax, Self-Assessment Tax paid through challan to Bank.
• Demand and Refund: Details of the demand raised (AY, demand under section, amount, and
demand status) and refund initiated (AY and amount) to them during a financial year can be
viewed from here.
• Other Information: Any other information in relation to sub-rule (2) of rule 114-I is
displayed here.

The detailed view of AIS i.e., the descriptive information can also be viewed by the user. (Refer View
AIS Details)

4.1.2 Icons
Certain icons can be seen on the AIS screen. The following table shows the description of the icons
used here.

This icon can be used to view AIS/TIS information as per requirement

4.1.3 Filters
Relevant filters are available (both at L2 Level Information and at L1 Level Information) on AIS view
which will help the user to filter the data and view specific information as required. The filters are
available.

4.2 View AIS Details


In AIS Details, user will be able to view the L2 Level Information (information source-wise aggregated
details) and L1 Level Information (information/ transactions details).

4.2.1 Information Source wise aggregated details (L2 Level Information)


L2 Level Information is the source wise aggregated value displayed in Annual Information Statement
(AIS) as well as Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS). L2 level information shows the information
category and information description based of various information sources.

• User can navigate to any part of AIS, L2 level information will be displayed along with relevant
details (Category, Code, description, and information source).
• The reported amount from the information source in the defined information code/
description will also be visible.
• The count (corresponding to specific L2 Level information) displays the total number of L1
level information. User can view the details of L1 level information by clicking on the specific
L2 level information.

4.2.2 Information/ Transaction Details (L1 Level Information)


L1 Level Information is the lowest level of information displayed in Annual Information Statement
(AIS). Each information is displayed by unique Transaction sequence number (TSN). User can navigate
to L1 Level Information of respective information category by clicking on the expand icon (Refer
Icons) to check details of any information/ transaction.

The following are the key points of L1 Level Information:

• All information relating to the information code and information source (for specific L2 level
information) will be displayed.
• User can see specific information as per requirement by using filters.
• Details like (Quarter, Date of transaction, relevant amount, Transaction status and Feedback
as provided) is visible in this view.
• Transaction status will define whether the information is active/ inactive. Inactive means, the
information is either deleted/ corrected by the information source.
• User can submit feedback (on single information and bulk mode) on the specific information
through this view. Based on the feedback provided the modified value for the information
will be displayed in this view (Refer Submit Feedback)
• User can download the CSV of L1 level information also through the download icon provided.

Note: If the user is yet to give feedback on any information, term “Optional” will be displayed in
the “Feedback” column. The relevant feedback value will be displayed if feedback is already
provided.

Note: Only 40 information(s) will be shown in mobile app. To view all records, visit AIS
functionality on AIS Homepage (Compliance Portal). A message will be provided to the taxpayer if
the information count is more than 40.

4.3 Download AIS


Other than viewing the AIS and giving feedback, taxpayer can also download AIS in PDF format by
following below mentioned steps on the mobile app:

Step 1: Access AIS section.


Step 2: Click on download icon available on the Top right on the screen.

Note: If the file size is large, download request will be taken and the file will be made
available for download through “Activity History” tab.

Note: The downloaded PDF will be password protected. To open the file, you will need to enter
the combination of the PAN (In lower case) and the date of birth in case of individual taxpayer or
date of incorporation for non-individual taxpayer in the format ddmmyyyy without any space. For
example, if the PAN is AAAAA1234A and the date of birth is 21st January 1991 then your password
will be aaaaa123a21011991.

4.4 Submit Feedback


User can provide feedback on the active information displayed under TDS/TCS Information, SFT
Information or Other information parts. Option to submit feedback on a single information, submit
feedback in bulk mode and view feedback history is available to the user. The feedback functionality
is discussed in detail below.

Note: In AIS, for some information, feedback status may be displayed as ‘Expected’ instead of
‘Optional’. This is because the information has been marked under e-campaign and accordingly
feedback on relevant information is expected. Taxpayer can provide feedback on such AIS
information using the feedback submission functionality. To view e-Campaign details, please
navigate to Compliance portal (Login to e-Filing>>’Pending Actions’ tab>>Click ‘Compliance
Portal’>>Click ‘e-Campaign (AY 2021-22 onwards)’.

4.4.1 Submit feedback on single information


User can submit the feedback on each Information displayed in AIS details. User can tap and select
one of the available options for submitting feedback by following the given steps:

Step 1: Navigate to AIS section (Refer View AIS Details) and view L2 level information.
Step 2: Tap on the specific L2 level information to view L1 level information on which feedback is to
be provided.

Step 3: Tap on “Submit Feedback (Optional)” and choose the relevant feedback option from the
dropdown and enter the feedback details (dependent on feedback option).

Feedback options are as follows:


Information is correct - If the information belongs to taxpayer and all the attributes of the
Information are correct.

Information is not fully correct - If the information belongs to taxpayer, but all the attributes of
the Information are not correct. Upon selecting this option, relevant information fields will be
displayed, and user will be able to update correct information details. e.g.- Account number,
Information value, etc.

The Information relates to other PAN/year - If the taxpayer is aware of the Information, but it
belongs to other PAN or other year e.g., joint ownership of property or receiving of amount
mentioned in another year.

Information is duplicate/included in other information - If the information displayed is already


included in any other information or it may be a duplicate information.

Information is denied - If the taxpayer completely denies the information displayed.

Customized feedback - The feedback option will be displayed based on the information category.
Marking information against customized feedback will not impact Value Accepted by Taxpayer in
Annual Information System (AIS).

Step 4: Click “Submit” to submit the feedback.

Step 5: Success message will be shown for the successful submission of feedback. The
acknowledgement receipt of the same can be downloaded from the download icon available
under feedback history.

4.4.2 Submit feedback through Bulk Mode


Other than providing single feedback, the user can also provide feedback on multiple L1 information
visible on expanding any L2 Level Information and submit the feedback in bulk mode. The following
steps can be followed for the same:
Step 1: Navigate to AIS Section (Refer View AIS Details) and view L2 level information.
Step 2: Tap on the specific L2 level information to view L1 level information.

Step 4: Bulk feedback screen is visible. Select multiple information for which the feedback is to be
provided. Once multiple information is selected, click on bulk feedback icon.

Step 5: Choose the relevant feedback from the given options.

• Information is correct
• Information relates to other PAN/year
• Information is duplicate/ included in other information

4.4.3 View Feedback History


Feedback history will display the details of feedback(s), submitted on the specific information. User
can navigate to this screen through:

Step 1: Navigate to AIS details (Refer View AIS Details) and view L2 level information.
Step 2: Expand specific L2 level information to view L1 level information.

Step 3: User can navigate to Feedback history page to view the entire history of the feedback
provided on that information.

Also, if taxpayer provides any feedback, then the complete feedback lifecycle will be available for
taxpayers. Feedback lifecycle will display the status of feedback confirmation by information source
and response received thereon.

Taxpayers will be able to view the below mentioned details: -

• Whether Feedback is Shared for Confirmation: - Yes/No


• Feedback Shared On: - The date on which feedback is shared with source.
• Source Responded On: - The date on which response is received from the source, if
responded.
• Source Response: - Latest response provided by the source on the taxpayer’s feedback.

5 Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS)


Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS) is an information category wise aggregated information
summary for a taxpayer. It shows value Processed by System (i.e., value generated after
deduplication of information based on pre-defined rules) and value Accepted by Taxpayer (i.e., value
derived after considering the taxpayer feedback and value Processed by System) under each
information category (e.g., Salaries, Interest, Dividend etc.). The derived information in TIS will be
used for prefilling of Return.

5.1 View TIS


After accessing the AIS Home Screen, user can view the TIS through following steps:

Step 1: On AIS Mobile App home screen, click on AIS Tile.


Step 2: Navigate to Taxpayer Information Statement (TIS) section to view TIS details.

L3 Level Information

Details aggregated at information category level is displayed by default in TIS. On clicking on the
specific L3, the information source wise details (L2 level) can be viewed.

L2 Level Information

Details aggregated at information code and information source under specific information category
is displayed when L3 level by clicking on specific L2 level information.

This view also displays the value Reported by Source, value Processed by System, and value Accepted
by Taxpayer of relevant information.

At this level, the processing of duplicate information is also done by the system to club duplicate
information (displayed in grey) under one information category and accordingly calculate the value
Processed by System.

Value Reported by Source refers to information value as reported by the information source
against a PAN.

Value Processed by System refers to value generated after deduplication of information based on
pre-defined rules. The value Processed by System is displayed only in Taxpayer Information
Summary (TIS).

Value Accepted by Taxpayer refers to value displayed in Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS)
which is derived after considering the taxpayer feedback (if any) and value Processed by System.
The derived information will be used for prefilling of Return.

Note: If the value Reported by Source / value Processed by System is not correct, taxpayer is
advised to provide feedback in AIS to update the value Accepted by Taxpayer which is used for
pre-filling of Income Tax Return (ITR).

5.2 Download TIS


Other than viewing the Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS), taxpayer can download Taxpayer
Information Summary (TIS) in PDF format and JSON by following below mentioned steps on the
mobile:

Step 1: Access TIS section.


Step 2: Click on download icon available on the Top right of the screen and select Download TIS.
TIS will be downloaded.

If the PDF file size is large, a message will appear saying that the download request will be initiated,
and the link will be made available in activity history tab once the file is ready for download. (Refer
Download Artifacts from Activity History)

Note: The downloaded PDF will be password protected. To open the file, you will need to enter
the combination of the PAN (In lower case) and the date of birth in case of individual taxpayer or
date of incorporation for non-individual taxpayer in the format ddmmyyyy without any space. For
example, if the PAN is AAAAA1234A and the date of birth is 21st January 1991 then your password
will be aaaaa1234a21011991

6 Activity History
All the relevant activities carried out by the user can be viewed in activity history. The same can also
be downloaded from the AIS Mobile App. Activity History can be viewed by following below
mentioned steps on the mobile:

Step 1: Click on “ ” on AIS Homepage to open Activity History. Activity history slides up.

User will be provided summary view of activity performed on the AIS Mobile Application and portal.
System generated ID (Activity ID) will be created for each performed activity (feedback will have
feedback ID), Activity date, Activity description and details will be displayed under this tab.

6.1.1 Download Artifacts from Activity History


When user is trying to download any document (relating to AIS/ TIS) and the file size is large, the
request for download will be captured. Once the file is available, the same will be displayed in activity

history and the link will be made available in activity history tab once the file is ready for download.
User can only download the last 10 days Feedback Acknowledgement Receipts and preliminary

On click of Settings, various app related settings such as Reset MPIN (as of now) can be
manage. User can change MPIN by selecting 4-digit MPIN and updating other details (as

7.7 Change PAN


On the click of Change PAN, a confirmation message will be displayed. If the User clicks on “Yes”
then the user will be navigated to AIS signup screen where user can enter the different PAN and
Date of Birth/ Incorporation/Formation to get started with verification.

7.8 Sign Out


On click of Sign Out, a confirmation message will be displayed. User will be able to sign out
from the current active session by clicking on “Yes” button. The user will be navigated to
MPIN screen.User can again log into the mobile app directly using the MPIN

8 Chatbot
A chatbot is an artificial intelligence (AI) software that can simulate a conversation (or a chat) with a
user in natural language. The user can post the query on the chatbot and can get instant replies/
resolution based on the frequently asked questions and machine learning. The same is implemented
on AIS Homepage (Compliance Portal) and AIS Mobile App to enable quick help to the users.
User can accordingly post their query on the chatbot provided on AIS Homepage/ AIS mobile app or
navigate through the question category provided by the chatbot to get instant answer/ resolution of
specific question.

8.1.1 Accessing Chatbot


The chatbot can be accessed at following places through mentioned steps:
Step 1: Login on AIS mobile app by entering your self-selected MPIN that was created during
registration.
Step 2: User can click on the chatbot icon provided on bottom right corner of the screen.
