Seminar Plan: Globalization

1. Greetings and Icebreaker (10 minutes)

"Which global brand do you use the most, and how do you think it connects different parts of
the world?"

2. Introduction to Globalization (15 minutes)

 Definition of Globalization:
Globalization refers to the shift toward a more integrated and interdependent world economy.
It’s driven by technology, trade, and international investment.

Globalization is the process by which markets, production, and consumption become

interconnected across countries. Think about companies like McDonald’s, which operates under
a global brand but localizes its menu to match local tastes.

Key Dimensions of Globalization:

1. Globalization of Markets:
The merging of distinct national markets into one huge global marketplace.
o Example Case Study: Coca-Cola’s Global Market Strategy:
Coca-Cola adapts its products to local tastes (like sweeter Coca-Cola in some regions),
but the core product remains the same.
 "Why do you think Coca-Cola has succeeded in becoming a global brand while
retaining local flavors?"
(Adaptation to local culture while maintaining a consistent brand.)

2. Globalization of Production:
Sourcing of goods and services from different locations to take advantage of national
differences in production costs and quality.
o Example Case Study: Apple’s Global Supply Chain:
Apple designs iPhones in the U.S. but sources components from Japan, Taiwan, and
China.
 "How does sourcing components globally help Apple?"
(It reduces costs, uses specialized skills, and helps the company remain
competitive.)
3. Drivers of Globalization (20 minutes)

1. Technological Change:
Advances in communication, information processing, and transportation technology.
o Example Case Study: Amazon’s Global Reach:
Amazon reaches customers worldwide due to internet advancements.
 "How do you think Amazon has leveraged technology to expand its global
presence?"
(Through its online platform, efficient logistics, and fast communication tools.)

2. Decline in Trade and Investment Barriers:

Since WWII, there has been a reduction in tariffs and quotas, facilitating global trade.
o Example Case Study: WTO’s Role in Lowering Trade Barriers:
The establishment of the WTO has reduced trade barriers between countries, enabling
easier international business.
 "How might reduced trade barriers affect local and global businesses?"
(It opens new markets but also increases competition for local businesses.)

Global Institutions:
The World Bank, IMF, and WTO play important roles in promoting trade and economic
stability.

o Example Case Study: IMF’s Role in Stabilizing Economies:

The IMF provides financial aid to countries in economic crises, stabilizing global markets.
 "Do you think the IMF's interventions are always beneficial, or could they have
downsides?"
(They can help stabilize economies, but some believe they impose harsh
conditions on borrowing nations.)

4. The Changing Demographics of the Global Economy (15 minutes)

1. Shift in Economic Power:

Discuss the rise of emerging markets such as China, India, and Brazil.
o Example Case Study: China’s Rise as an Economic Power:
China has become the world’s largest exporter, reshaping global trade.
 "How has China’s rise influenced other global businesses?"
(Many companies now look to China for both production and as a key market for
their products.)

2. Implications for Businesses:

Companies must consider emerging markets when developing international strategies.
o "What are the challenges and opportunities for businesses entering emerging markets
like India or Brazil?"
(Opportunities include access to new customers and growth potential; challenges
include navigating local regulations and competition.)

5. Globalization Debate: Pros and Cons (15 minutes)

1. Pros of Globalization:
o Lower Costs for Consumers – Access to cheaper goods and services.
o Increased Economic Growth – Boosts trade and GDP.
 Example Case Study: Walmart's Global Sourcing Strategy:
Walmart can offer low prices due to sourcing from low-cost countries like China.
 "What are the benefits of Walmart’s global strategy for consumers?"
(Answer: Lower prices, more product variety.)

2. Cons of Globalization:
o Job Losses in Developed Economies: Manufacturing jobs have shifted to low-cost
countries.
o Environmental Impact: Industrial growth in developing nations has increased pollution.
 Example Case Study: U.S. Manufacturing Job Losses Due to Outsourcing:
The U.S. has seen declines in its manufacturing sector due to outsourcing to
countries like China.
 "Do you think the benefits of globalization outweigh the costs?"
(Answer: Varies based on perspective, but some may argue it benefits
corporations more than workers.)

3. Discussion Question:
"Do you think globalization benefits everyone equally, or are there clear winners and
losers? Can you think of any recent examples?"
(Answers may vary, but can include reference to workers in developed countries vs.
developing countries benefiting more.)
