Read the following extract on William Shakespeare’s life and answer the questions that follow.
William Shakespeare (23 April 1564 – 23 April 1616) was an English playwright, actor and poet and is
often called England’s national poet. Born in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, he was an important
member of the Lord Chamberlain’s Men company of theatrical players from roughly 1594 onward.
William married Anne Hathaway on 28 November, 1582 and they had three children: Susanna, Hamnet
and Judith.
By 1599, William Shakespeare and his business partners built their own theater on the south banks of
the Thames River (London), which they called the Globe Theater. In 1613, the Globe Theater burnt
down whilst they were performing the play Henry VIII. It was rebuilt in 1614 but finally destroyed in
1642. In 1997, a new Globe Theatre was built a few hundred yards down the road.
