DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE 8

THIRD QUARTER

I. Objectives:

MELCS
Learning Competency: Determine the number of protons, neutrons and electrons in a particular atom
Code: S8MT-IIIe-f-10

At the end of the lesson, all of the students should be able to:

a. Determine the atomic number, atomic mass, number of protons, neutrons and electrons.
b. Locate the sub-atomic particles in atomic structure and atomic number in periodic table
c. Demonstrates understanding of the lesson by completing the activity
d. Know the importance of the subatomic particles of an element

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Atoms/ Subatomic Particles
References: Mixploring Science 8 book (pages 118-127)
Materials: printed pictures, periodic table of elements, activity sheets

III. Procedure

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Preliminary Activities
Greetings
Good morning class! How is your day so far? Good morning, Ma’am! We are fine.

That’s good to hear! So, can I expect a full blast of energy Yes, Ma’am!
and active participation from you?

Prayer
Before we begin the lesson this morning, let us ask the
guidance of our almighty father to enlighten our mind in Okay Ma’am. (Students will stand up)
order for us to understand our lesson this morning. Shall
we all stand for our prayer?

Maria, can you lead the prayer? Maria: Okay Ma’am. (Leads the prayer)

Classroom Management
I would like to request everyone to arrange your chairs (Students will arrange their chairs and will pick up the
properly and make sure there are no trashes around you. trashes)

Checking of attendance
I think everyone is present. I’m glad that everyone (Students will clap three times)
understands the reasons of coming to school regularly.

Now give me 3 hand claps before we start! (Students will clap 3 times)

B. Motivation
I will show you a different substance, and I want you
to answer loudly if it is Solid, Liquid or Gas.

Do you understand class? Yes, Ma’am.

The teacher will show these pictures.

Students: solid
Students: liquid

Students: gas

Students: solid

Students: gas

You are all correct! Good job everyone!

B. Recall/Review
In our previous lesson you have learned about
elements and compounds based on their composition
from the given chemical names and formulas of
elements and compounds.

I will utter a different example of elements and

compounds. Now, you have to classify it weather if it
is Element or a Compound.

Are you ready? Yes, Ma’am!

Diamond? Element!

Glucose? Compound!

Sulfuric Acid? Compound!

Iron? Element!

Very good class!

Thank you everyone for still remembering our previous

lesson.

C. Lesson Proper
ACTIVITY
I will show you five (5) scramble letters that need to
arrange that will help for the next activity later on.
ANSWERS:
ARRANGE ME! 1. PROTON
1. ROTPON 2. NEUTRON
2. EUNTORN 3. ELECTRON
3. CELETORN 4. ATOM
4. TOMA 5. NUCLEUS
5. SUELCUN

Using these words presented and your Periodic Table of

Elements, you will answer the question “What I know
about Atom/ Subatomic Particles of Atoms?”
I will give you an activity sheet and you are expected to
finish your activity within 10 minutes.
Yes, Ma’am!
Are we clear class?

Your 10 minutes start now

ANALYSIS

1. What did you use to complete your activity (ANSWERS MAY VARY)
sheets?
2. What are the three subatomic particles of atom? We use the periodic table of elements.

The three subatomic particles of an atom are Protons,

3. What are the electric charges of protons, Neutrons, and Electrons.
neutrons and electrons?
Protons has a positive electric charge with the symbol of p+
Neutrons has a no net electric charge with the symbol of no
4. What is the relationship of an element and atom? Electron has a negative electric charge with the symbol of e-

Very good everyone! Atom is part of an element. A particular element is

composed of only one type of atom.
E. Abstract

ATOMIC NUMBER
 The number that is unique to a given element
 Tells the number of protons which is also equal to the
number of electrons
MASS NUMBER
 The sum of the number of protons and number of
neutrons in an atom
ISOTOPES
 Atoms having the same number of protons but
different in number of neutrons
 Are identified through mass number

For example, of an Isotope:

ATOMIC NUMBER

SYMBOL

ATOMIC MASS

Atomic number – 30
Atomic mass – 65
Mass number – 65
Number of Proton – 30
Number of Neutron – 35
Number of Electron – 30

APPLICATION
I will divide the class into 5 groups. Based on our lesson that
we discussed, you have to determine the number of protons,
neutrons and electron in your activity sheets within 10
minutes.

(ANSWERS MAY VARY)

What are the three subatomic particles of atom? We have learned how to determine the number of protons,
neutrons and electrons.
Which of the following subatomic particles determine the
identity of an atom? Protons, neutrons and electrons.

What two subatomic particles make up almost all of the mass

of an atom? Protons

Very good everyone! Protons and Neutrons

Give yourself a three hand claps!

(Students will clap 3 times)

IV. Evaluation
