Discussion Assignment -5

Cultural Day Event

The presence of students from eight different ethnic groups in Myanmar, along with Chinese

students, creates a unique and diverse learning environment. The cultural day event involved

students representing each ethnic group, researching their cultural heritage, and sharing their

findings through dance, food, and other cultural presentations. Event like this foster intercultural

understanding and tolerance among students (Jaafari, 2024).

Activities and Benefits

The cultural day event, featuring dance performances, food stalls, booth decorations, and

handmade souvenirs from various ethnic groups, offers numerous benefits for students. These

activities provide opportunities for exposure to a wide range of cultures, traditions, and customs.

Also, this helps to break down stereotypes and dispel misconceptions. By learning about the

experiences and perspectives of others, students develop empathy and understanding for different

cultures (Brisk, Barnhardt, Herrera, & Rochon, 2002).

Moreover, the event encourages students to interact with peers from diverse backgrounds,

promoting cross-cultural communication and collaboration. For students from minority groups,

the cultural day event can provide a sense of belonging and validation (Brisk, Barnhardt, Herrera,

& Rochon, 2002)..

Metrics and Assessment

To determine the success of the cultural day event, it is essential to set clear outcomes and

expectations. Some potential outcomes include:

 Increased cultural awareness and understanding among students.

 Improved cross-cultural communication skills.

 Enhanced appreciation for diversity.

 Stronger sense of community and belonging.

To assess the effectiveness of the event, the following metrics can be used:

 Student surveys: Pre- and post-event surveys can measure changes in students' cultural

awareness, attitudes, and understanding.

 Teacher observations: Teachers can observe student interactions and participation to

assess the level of engagement and cross-cultural communication.

 Feedback from parents and community members: Feedback from parents and community

members can provide insights into the event's impact.

By carefully considering these factors and implementing appropriate assessment strategies,

the effectiveness of the cultural day event can be evaluated and improvements can be made

for future events.
