Magazine Articles

What is an article?

An article is a piece of writing that usually appears in a newspaper or a


magazine. It often covers a specific topic. Articles can be persuasive,
informative, or entertaining.

School magazine articles are mainly written by students for students. It is like
writing to a large number of friends all at once.

The approach

 Do not give the impression that you are an expert and the readers know
nothing.
 It must be written in a convincing way.

Register

Depending on the topics, the register (level of language) can be informal, formal
or even neutral.

Format of a magazine article

(1) Title: Always give the article a title. [Make it interesting. It should be a short, clear
summary of the article. The main topic of the article should be mentioned in the title. You
may also have subheadings before each paragraph.

Describing a place -- Use adjectives

Giving opinion -- Address the reader directly (OR) present a question

More formal articles -- Present in a short statement

Book/Movie review -- Use the same title

Features of a title

 Use the present simple


 Use compound nouns and abbreviations
 Omit the verb to “be”, articles, prepositions
 Use “to be + PP” for future passive; use “to infinitive” for future active]

(2) Introduction: An effective introduction often starts with a question to involve the reader
and encourage him to continue reading. The introduction should be designed to hook the
reader. State the topic of the article in the introduction.
(3) Body: Begin each paragraph with a clear topic sentence. Develop the topic in detail. Use
linking words or phrases.

(4) Ending: The ending should be fairly short and use the same personal style and register as
the introduction and transition.

You can (i) summarize the article, or

(ii) offer your own opinion, comments, recommendations, or

(iii) leave the reader with something to think about.

Points to consider

 Pay attention to intended readers and the purpose of the writing.


 Avoid extremely vivid description, over-emotional or over-personal writing, and
simplistic vocabulary.
 Use a wide range of vocabulary.
