Type Specific Navigation Equipment Familiarization
Guidelines
Familiarization in the use of all navigation equipment on the ship MUST be given to all newly Joining
1
Masters and Deck Officers by using the checklists that follow.
Each time a Master or Deck Officer is joining a vessel, an auto generated cover sheet with details of his
previous experience with the type of navigation equipment fitted on board will be sent to the vessel. The
2
Master or Deck Officer will then only need to be familiarized for the equipment he has no previous
experience on.
This familiarization may be conducted by any deck officer presently on board but it should preferably be
3
done by a deck officer who is not signing off the ship in the present port.
Newly joining deck officers MUST be provided with sufficient opportunity to visit the navigating bridge and
be familiarized in operation of Navigation equipment using the respective equipment manuals and the
4
checklists. The Trainee must confirm to the Trainer, through practical demonstration, that he is competent
in the use of this equipment and is aware of its limitations.
After completion of familiarization, the master MUST satisfy himself that the officer is capable of operating
Bridge Equipment effectively before authorizing him to keep an unsupervised watch. The Master MUST
5
confirm his satisfaction by signing the cover sheet and entering the Date and (Ship’s) Time when such
assessment was made.
Below is the recommended minimum number of underway navigation watches that a newly joined deck
officer should stand along with an existing deck officer before the master assigns him independent charge
of a watch.
a) 1st time 3rd Officer in rank - At least 2 navigation watches while the vessel is underway.
6 b) Any deck officer with less than 12 months of total sea time as an OOW - At least 1 navigation watch
while the vessel is underway.
c) Any deck officer who has no previous experience on the type of RADAR or ECDIS fitted on board – At
least 1 navigation watch while the vessel is underway.
d) All other deck officers – Master’s discretion.
To assist Masters in completing ‘S-3.15c C’, the navigation equipment experience of Masters and Deck
Officers who have previously served on vessels managed by the company has been mapped. The
procedure to be followed is as follows:
a) Each time a Master or Deck Officer is joining a vessel, an auto generated cover sheet with details of his
7 previous experience with the type of navigation equipment fitted on board will be sent to the vessel. The
Master or Deck Officer will then only need to be trained for the equipment he has no previous experience
on.
b) The cover sheet of the Checklist also mentions whether the joining deck officer requires doubling up of
watches.
If the joiner, trainer or Master feel that the familiarization period is insufficient for attainment of the required
8 level of familiarity with the ship’s navigation equipment, additional time for familiarization MUST be given
before keeping an independent watch.
