CONNECTORS

CORRELATIVE CONJUNCTIONS
Correlative conjunctions are pairs of words that join ideas in sentences. They work like bricks that
must be joined together to make a house.

List of correlative conjunctions

Both ...and Addition 1. Michael can both read and write.
2. Both Cabo Delgado and Maputo have beautiful beaches.
3. He won in both the child and the adult races.
4. Both radio and television are distracting.
5. My sister is both smart and intelligent.
Not only ...but Addition 6. Mozambican food is not only delicious to eat but also
also beautiful to look at.
7. Not only red but also blue matches gold.
8. Not only is she stupid but also stubborn.
9. She is not only a novelist but also a poetess.
10. Love is not only a sentiment but also an art.
Either ....or Alternative 11. I can have either coffee or tea.
12. I can work either Monday or Tuesday.
13. You may have either apples or pears.
14. Either Peter or John has taken the book.
15. Either you live now or I call the police.
neither ....nor Alternative 16. My grandmother could neither read nor write, but she was
a very wise person.
17. He likes neither fish nor chicken.
18. Neither you nor I will go to the game
19. Neither Eusénio nor Tico-Tico won the World Cup.
20. It is neither hot nor tasty.
Whether…or Alternative 21. Tell me whether you know the route or not.
22. I don’t know whether he took a cab or he walked home.
23. You have to learn them whether they are easy or (they are)
difficult.
24. He must do it, whether he likes it or not
25. I don’t know whether he’s alive or dead.

Correlative conjunctions connect two EQUAL grammatical items.


If a NOUN follows one conjunction, a NOUN must follow the other; they must have similar
patterns.

1. YES: Either the cat or the dog must go outside.


2. NO: Either the cat or dog must go outside.

If a VERB follows one correlative conjunction, a VERB must follow the other.
1. YES: You should either run or swim today.
2. NO: You should either run, or you should swim today.

Exercise I
Rewrite the sentences using the paired conjunctions given in brackets. Make any necessary
changes.
Tom doesn’t lie to his friends. Paul doesn’t either. (neither...nor)
Neither Tom nor Paul lie to their friend.
1. Fred likes helping his friends. So does Linda. (both…and)________________________________

When using correlative conjunctions to connect two subjects, the 2nd subject must agree with the
verb (except with both…and; those always get a plural verb).
1. YES: Every night either the dogs or the cat wakes me up.
2. NO: Every night either the dogs or the cat wake me up.
3. YES: Today, neither my sister nor my brothers visit.
4. NO: Today, neither my sister nor my brothers visits.

Exercise II
Choose the correct verb:
