SCIENCE ACTIVITY No.

1
The Digestive System & Mango Shake Preparation

Objective: To understand the process of digestion by comparing it to the steps involved

in making a mango shake with a blender.

Materials Needed:

 Blender (represents the stomach)

 1 ripe mango (represents food we eat)
 Evaporated milk (represents enzymes and digestive juices)
 Sugar (represents nutrients like glucose)
 Ice (represents undigested food or water)

Instructions and Questions

1. Prepare the Mango

o Action: Peel and slice the mango into small pieces.
o Digestive System Parallel: This represents chewing and breaking down
food into smaller pieces in the mouth.
o Question: Why do we chew food before swallowing?

2. Add Ingredients to the Blender

o Action: Put the mango pieces, a little sugar, evaporated milk, and ice into
the blender.
o Digestive System Parallel: The mixing of ingredients represents the
different nutrients (like proteins, fats, and sugars) and enzymes that help in
digestion. This mixture is called chyme.
o Question: What role do enzymes play in breaking down food in our
stomach?

3. Blending the Ingredients

o Action: Turn on the blender and blend until the ingredients are smooth.
o Digestive System Parallel: This step represents the stomach churning
and mixing food with digestive juices. Just like the blender, the stomach
breaks down food into a semi-liquid form called chyme.
o Question: Why does the stomach need to break food down into smaller
parts?

4. Pour and Drink the Shake

o Action: Pour the shake into a glass and enjoy it!
o Digestive System Parallel: As you drink the shake, it enters your small
intestine, where nutrients are absorbed into your bloodstream.
o Question: Why is the small intestine important for nutrient absorption?
5. Leftover Pulp (if any)
o Action: Notice any pulp or small bits that may not be fully blended.
o Digestive System Parallel: This is like fiber in our diet, which can’t be
digested and helps form waste that goes through the large intestine.
o Question: Why do we need fiber in our diet?

Reflection Questions

 Q1: How is a blender similar to the stomach in the way it processes food?

 Q2: What would happen if we didn’t chew our food or if the stomach didn’t break it
down further?

 Q3: How does adding evaporated milk (like digestive juices) make the shake easier
to drink, similar to how digestive juices make nutrients easier to absorb?
