ME – 105 WORKSHOP PRACTICE

WORKSHOP PRACTICE
An Introduction
Scope and Objectives
In order to gain a good basic knowledge of manufacturing
process, a student entering the first year of engineering
degree, should undergo a course on workshop practice.

General workshop practices are included in the curriculum in

order to provide hands on experience about use of different
engineering materials, tools , equipments and processes
that are common in the engineering field.
Manufacturing Process
Manufacturing engineering, or the manufacturing process, are the
steps through which raw materials are transformed into a final
product. The manufacturing process begins with the product
design, and materials specification from which the product is
made.
Example of a Manufacturing Process
Introduction to Workshop Practice
• Workshop practise gives the basic working
knowledge required for the production of various
engineering products.

• It explains the construction, function, use and

application of different working tools, equipment,
machines as well as the technique of manufacturing
a product from its raw material.
Trades in Workshop Practice

• Fitting Shop/Metal Shop
• Welding Shop
• Electrical Shop
• Introduction to Advance
Workshop
Carpentry
• Carpentry may be defined as the process of making wooden
components.

• It starts from a marketable form of wood and ends with a finished

product. It deals with building work, furniture , cabinet making
etc.

• Joinery, i.e. preparation of joints is one of the important

operations in all wood-works. It deals with specific work of a
carpenter like making different types of joints to form a finished
product.

• Working with wood for various applications. A student must

study commonly used carpentry joints such as Cross lap joint,
Tee joint, Dovetail joint, Mortise & tenon joint etc.

Safety Precautions and Guidelines

1. Personal Safety

2. Team Safety

3. Equipment/Machine Safety
Safety Precautions and Guidelines
Personal Safety
• Taking extreme care while working with electrical equipment.
• Avoid contacting circuits with wet hands or wet materials
• Keep the use of extension cords to a minimum and cords
as short as possible. Tie off excess cords out of pathways.
• Make certain that all electrical equipment is properly
grounded
• When working with machines/ tools, keep your fingers well
away from the tool.
• When working on any equipment the appropriate safety
equipment for hand, eye and
• hearing protection must be used, if needed.
Safety Precautions and Guidelines
Personal Safety
• Don’t fool yourself into thinking that you can’t get hurt!
• A fraction of a second can change your life forever.
• Never trust mechanical devices – things go wrong.
• Never place yourself in a position where you could be hurt if
something mechanical failed.
• Watch for possible pinch points, especially for your hands.
• Give your undivided attention and thought to the task before
you.
• Daydreaming or talking with a friend reduces your attention on
the job.
Safety Precautions and Guidelines
Team Safety
• Must take in account all safety aspects while working with
team.

Equipment/Machine Safety
• Before using an instrument or machine, be sure to know how
to turn it off in case of emergency.
• Check all electrical connections and mounting bolts before
each use.
• Check that all rotating parts are free to turn, and that there is
no mechanical obstruction before operating.
• Laboratory equipment is not to be placed in corridors.
Working Safely
Why is working safely
important?

Primary concern:

‘People don’t get hurt’

What are our safety rules?

Follow safety instructions

Knowing about
workplace hazards
What are hazards?

A hazard is anything that could hurt

you or make you sick.

What could hurt you or make you sick

where you work?
A hazard is
anything that
can

cut you
A hazard is
anything that
can

trip you
or
slip you
•A slip occurs when, upon heel contact, a heel slide occurs that
causes unbalance and a potential fall Usually backward.
•A trip occurs when the foot strikes a near ground obstacle that
abruptly arrests the movement of the foot when the body’s center
of gravity is in motion Usually forward.

Knowing about
evacuation
Why do we have an evacuation
drill?
• We can leave safely.
• No one gets hurt.
• No one gets left behind.
Evacuation Drill

When you hear the alarm:

1. Stop work
2. Walk through the emergency exit to
the assembly point
3. Answer your name when called
4. Wait for instructions
Bad Work Habits
BAD WORK HABITS

• Over Confidence
• Working without PPEs
• Standing at the wrong place
• Working Alone
• Shortcuts
• Messing up the working area
• Leaving working area in a mess
• Keeping the tools/equipments at the wrong
place

• WHEN REQUIRED TO EVACUATE, LEAVE THE WORKSHOP
CALMLY AND AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE, DO NOT
HESITATE.
• IN THE CASE OF A FIRE, YELL “FIRE! FIRE! FIRE!” TO TELL
OTHERS ABOUT THE FIRE AND ONLY TRY TO EXTINGUISH
A FIRE IF IT IS SMALL AND YOU ARE CONFIDENT ENOUGH
TO DO SO.
