A) Linear Scale
A scale which is shown on a line in the corner of the map. A map scale is the map distance ratio that
corresponds to the actual ground distance. The scale on the map presents a distance measurement
between each landmark.
B) Latitudes
These are imaginary lines running from west to east. Lines of latitude measure north-south position
between the poles. Lines of latitude are all parallel to each other, thus they are often referred to as
parallels.
C) Key
A key or legend is included with a map to unlock it. It gives the information needed for the map to make
sense. Maps often use symbols or colors to represent things, and the map key explains what they mean. )
D) Map
A map is a drawing of the view from above or all of the earth's surface. Cartographers are the map
makers who prepare different types of maps. Different maps have different uses or purposes.
E) Block Diagram
A block diagram shows a block of land as if it has been cut out of the countryside with a huge knife.
F) Globe
Globe is a spherical scale model of earth. A globe is a picture of a planet drawn on a sphere.

c) What are physical maps?
Physical maps often include much of the same data found on a political map, but their primary purpose is
to show landforms like deserts, mountains and plains.
d) What is statistics?
These are sets of numbers about a topic such as population or rain fall. These are useful to show different
information about different things. These may be in the form of numbers, integers, tables with columns
and rows and other different values.
e) What are symbols?
Symbols in the key might be pictures or icons that represent different things on the map. Sometimes the
map might by colored or shaded, and the key explains what the colors and shades mean.
f) What are distribution maps?
Distribution maps indicate the distribution of any particular feature in an area. Distribution maps may be
qualitative such as those representing vegetation or soil of a region, or quantitative, i.e., it may be
representing population.
g) What is the difference between magma and lava?
Magma is the molten rock material below the earth’s surface. Lava is the molten rock material above the
earth’s surface. Lava may be sticky (concentrated) and runny (dilute) which is responsible for different
shapes of volcanoes.
