Substation Maintenance
DONOVAN JOHN ROMA
FACILITY ENGINEER TOYOTA MOTOR PHILIPPINES CORPORATION SUBSTATION MAINTENANCE Objectives: •Test all transformers, relay, breakers etc
•Know the condition of the transformers, breakers,
relay
•Maintainall equipments in the substation on its good
working condition
•Recommend and implement all necessary
improvements needed SUBSTATION MAINTENANCE Activities: Transformers: •Turn Ratio Test •Winding Resistance Test •Insulation Resistance Test •Dielectric Breakdown Factor •Power Factor •Dissolved Gas Analysis •Water/Moisture Content •Oil Chemical Analysis SUBSTATION MAINTENANCE Activities: Relay: •Relay Testing •Calibration Gas / Vacuum circuit breaker: •Insulation resistance test •Contact resistance test •Gas analysis SUBSTATION MAINTENANCE Turn Ratio Test •This test is used to make sure that the Turns Ratio between the transformer is correct •Turns determines the output voltage of the transformer with respect to the input voltage • This test detects shorts between turns of the same coil, which indicates insulation failure between the turns •Turn Ratio Tester / Transformer Turn Ratio is being used SUBSTATION MAINTENANCE Winding Resistance Test • This test is used to determine the following: 1. Calculation of I2R component of conductor losses 2. Possible loose connections, broken strands, and high contact resistance in tap changers • Micro ohmmeter or Kelvin Bridge is being used SUBSTATION MAINTENANCE Insulation Resistance Test • This test is used to determine the quality of insulation within the transformer • Also known as Megger Test • Insulation resistance tester is being used SUBSTATION MAINTENANCE Dielectric Breakdown Voltage (DBV) Test • This test is performed to measure an insulating liquid’s ability to withstand electric stress • Dielectric Breakdown voltage tester is being used SUBSTATION MAINTENANCE Insulation Power Factor • This test indicates the dielectric loss (leakage current) of the oil • High power factor indicates deterioration and/or contamination by products such as water, carbon or other conducting particles; metal soaps caused by acids; attacking transformer metals and products of oxidation SUBSTATION MAINTENANCE Dissolve Gas Analysis (DGA) • This test provides the dissolved gases in the oil • Close observation of dissolved gases in the oil and other oil properties provides the most valuable information about the health of the transformer SUBSTATION MAINTENANCE Water/Moisture Content • Measurement of how much water present in the oil • Water accelerates the deterioration of both the insulating oil and paper insulation SUBSTATION MAINTENANCE Oil Chemical Analysis • Interfacial Tension (IFT) • Measures the tension at the interface between two liquids (oil & water) which do not mix • This test is sensitive to the presence of oil decay products and soluble polar contaminants from solid insulating materials • Acidity / Neutralization number • Amount of potassium hydroxide (KOH) in milligrams (mg) that it takes to neutralize the acid in 1 gram (gm) of transformer oil • Acid attacks cellulose and accelerates insulation degradation SUBSTATION MAINTENANCE Relay Testing • Check and verify the operations & accuracy of protective relays SUBSTATION MAINTENANCE Gas Circuit Breaker • Insulation Resistance • Contact Resistance • SF6 Gas Test
